Ehh- “must win” implies there is something big at stake. This LSU team isn’t winning anything this year, but “need to win”, “could win” yes.

How many wins you see there?

They are good enough to win at least two and could surprise with a third. Arkansas has struggled all year, BAMA likely won't shoot lights out on the road, you never know what Kentucky team sill show up and Florida has played a little over their head. So you never know. Even SC can have that hiccup game as well as they have played. Tigers always seem to struggle at Tennessee and at Arkansas.

Anything can happen. But to say they are good enough to win at least two and maybe three is a bit tough to see right now. Certainly this Musselman's worst team at Arkansas. At home, with a week to get healthy? You just can't lose this game because if you do.....

Tennessee and Alabama are two of the best teams in the league. Two that are clearly better than you. While Alabama probably won't shoot 56% at LSU, if McMahon foolishly tries to run with them again he will likely see at least 90 under the "visitors" portion of the score board.

Florida is hot right now. South Carolina is even hotter (I guess Lamont Paris didn't get the message its supposed to take 3, 4, 5 years to be good). As crazy as it might sound, maybe LSU's best chance for a win (outside of Arkansas) is Kentucky at home.

Agree. We were only favored to win 4 of our remaining sec games after the ole miss one, this game saturday and 3 later in the season against vandy mizzou and georgia. That hasnt changed

Yep. Lose this one and there is a very real possibility LSU will be fighting to win 6 games in SEC play. If that turns out to be the case, you're going to get to the end of the season and see that McMahon has the lowest winning % of all of the 6 new coaches hired before last season...probably by a pretty significant margin (though Dennis Gates at Missouri is trying to close that gap after a great year last season).

For better or worse, LSU fans aren't looking for too much from McMahon to give them any semblance of something to believe in. Start 3-1 in conference play (after an uninspiring non-conf. performance) only to follow it up with a 10 game losing streak and no one will be interested by the time LSU gets to the home game vs. Georgia. He HAS to start mixing some wins in here...even though that won't be easy. Tomorrow is the best opportunity for a win in a month. Gotta have it!

This sounds like a wish list.. I see zero confidence in your post… you are talking about what these other teams COULD do instead of what LSU reds to do to win these games.

You were singing Gates' praises not too long ago. Did the flavor of the week not last? Last year you said that Gates would not accept a bad roster (which was easy because he already had a draft pick on his team day 1). So did Gates decide to just "accept" a bad team this year?

Yes. Because he inherited a roster with less returning players than LSU, brought in several mid-major and JUCO transfers, and went 25-10 (11-7). The point of highlighting Gates was not to suggest he was somehow a great HC. It was in response to the claims of you, and others, that "no one" could win in a similar situation that McMahon faced. Yet, there was a guy who did just that.

I don't think I ever said that Gates "would not accept a bad roster". But I'm open to correction if you can find where I did.

But again, the comp of Gates was NOT to say he was a better HC than McMahon. But to point out the fact winning in similar adverse circumstances could, in fact, be done.

All of that aside, it continues to surprise me how a coach could have such fervent support and defenders in the face of the fact that, to date, he has accomplished literally nothing of note at LSU. As a long time LSU fan I've never seen a coach accomplish so little, yet have such ardent support. Then again, I'm one of the few who continues to show up to the PMAC in hopes that he WILL be guy who can bring the program to greatness. I guess I'm really the fool.

The reality is the fervent support of McMahon is not based upon any objective reasoning or accomplishment. His career record at LSU currently stands at 25-28 (5-20). It's based upon NOTHING MORE than a contrarian position to those who still sing the praises of Will Wade.

No one hates Matt McMahon personally. In fact, if you are an LSU basketball fan you WANT him to succeed. I can assure you, my sense of self-worth is not dependent upon "winning" a message board debate. But it's hard to understand such unwavering support for a guy who has done almost nothing but lose (against a equal level of competition) since he's been here.

EDT: I guess it is a good thing the internet did not exist during the Curly Hallman era. Otherwise, there would have been a small, but vocal, group of fans eating Golden Flake potato chips admonishing other LSU fans for not supporting Curly and pontificating that he was going to be great if just given enough time.

McMahon inherited zero players. All 3 that returned were in the portal.

And 1 of the 2 that Gates inherited was Kobe Brown, someone who was a 1st round NBA draft pick at the end of the year. McMahon got Adam Miller, an injured Mwani, and Juice Williams. Do you think McMahon wouldn't have traded Miller for Kobe???

And now that Kobe is gone, Missouri is winless in year 2, while McMahon has added to the talent and has 2 good freshmen signed for next year.

Did you not say that Missouri was better last year because Gates didn't accept a bad team??? So what gives this year?

Alt26 last year:

Gates came in MORE empty handed that McMahon. Yet, much to the dwindling McMahon supporters chagrin, he didn’t accept his team was supposed to be awful this year.

It isn't unwavering support. The program is being built from scratch out of the crater it was left in. How you split that blame between Woody and Wade is irrelevant. It will take time. No program under EQUAL conditions has been turned around in 1 or even 2 years. I am enjoying the ride. There may be a time that we feel that cMM isn't the guy, but so far he is improving the program and developing a core of players.

Off topic, but I remember when Curley started. When one of the walkons came back Gung ho over the 1st 5 am practice my first thought was "THAT won't work here..."

I was bitching mid week they had an off date. CMM and team had to spend time shooting and healing. But, I see the tigers losing the first half by a couple points and storm back to easily win the game. Ready to see cook hit 4 or 5 tres again.

This Arkansas team isn't up to their usual standards, but they looked great for about 35 minutes of Wednesday's game against a poor Missouri team

- how many years before you place any accountability on McMahon for losing?

- what is the standard for success under McMahon?
