If I was running a major program I would focus more of my efforts on recruiting OL and DL from High School. Everything else including QB is plentiful in the portal every year.

Well, be sure to send that memo to Coach Kelly.

If only you understood the dumbassery of your statement.

So you use all nil money on 5 star lineman. Second year in 5 start lineman aren’t starting because of previous 5 star lineman starting. This you’re in the portal looking for starting lineman.

I didn’t say Brian Kelly needed to listen to me. The portal is full of skill position players, but you rarely see an offensive lineman. Some of you are real assholes.

While I agree that championships are usually won at then line of scrimmage, and OL and DL should be a huge focus every year, your idea is just dumb.

The two best QBs LSU has ever had have been transfers. The portal is full of qb talent every year now . It wouldn’t be my priority.

OL, DB, and WRs are probably the positions you can stack the deepest because you play 5 at a time.

If you can convince a 5 star OT to play LG or RT for a year or 2 till your other 5 star LT graduates great

It’s pretty wild how many elite college QBs are transfers

all 3 Heisman finalist were transfers this year, and the last 2 winners were transfers.

I don't know that Caleb Williams counts as a true transfer, because he just stuck with Lincoln Riley. When Riley moved, so did he.
And it should be noted- if you start at QB for Riley, you're going to be a Heisman finalist. He had Mayfield and Murray winning, and brought Hurts to NYC.

As for the others, it's really a mixed bag for teams signing guys out of high school. You hope you pick the right young guy, because the other guy will transfer somewhere he can start, and often to a more potent offense that just needs a trigger man. And if you don't make some serious noise, the guy you picked to start will look at going to a team with a higher ceiling, again with an opening at QB.
Nussmeier may be an oddity in today's game, in that he waited 3 yrs to get his shot, and even then he really probably stayed because Kelly promised him the job when Daniels left.

QB strategy should be

Shoot for the stars and if you miss end up in the portal.

Elite teams stockpile QB talent but they’re also always leaving because they don’t get playing time. Even Good QBs have trouble supplanting a talented older guy with experience

My strategy would be to have plenty of cocaine and hookers around.

Just about every position is plentiful in the portal every year, literally like close to 2k players hit the portal each year

The idea is you need to balance things with high school and portal. You cant expect to have great consistent results taking 15-20-25 kids out the portal each year and only taking a dozen or less from high school. You build no culture around those teams and even portal players take time to get acclimated to new schools and systems.

OL and DL are some of the hardest positions to recruit out of HS because its hard to get a read on if a guy is really good or just bigger and stronger than the HS kids he plays against. a guy that is 6'5 315 is gonna push around most HS DEs that are in the 6'2 215 weight range. Can that guy do it against a guy that 6'5 270 and runs like a deer?

If anything, Lineman are easier to identify out of the portal cuz you have seen them go against guys their own size.
