Bama offering full ride. . .vs paying more to go to a better school

Conundrum we are currently facing. We know Bama has been rolling out the red carpet for smart out of state students. But is this limiting options in the long run?

What is the planned major?
There are a handful of programs where going to Alabama is better than going to.a "better" school.
ETA: My oldest is a sophomore in HS. We were coming back through Tuscaloosa recently and she dropped that Alabama was on her list.

Alabama's Engineering school is good.
Unless better school means MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, you should be fine. Alabama is a Top 100 Engineering school. State is higher ranked and will throw money at your kid too.

Don't let your sports rivalries cloud your vision. I've known a lot of smart people graduate from there and go on to big things.

Most companies won't care where they got the degree. They will care if they have a degree and have experience (aren't green as all get out coming out of college).
Don't know if Alabama offers a co-op program or not (it does, just looked). UAH does and I would highly recommend they do that wherever they go. Basically guarantees a job out of college and great way to earn experience.

Look into Huntsville. Bama engineering is a pipeline to really big things going on there. Alabama as fans I hate, but their state has been making phenomenal strides. Huntsville and Gulf shores are booming with industry

Curious what your son/daughter transcript and ACT looked like to get full ride offer from Bama . My daughter wants to go to LSU, she’s currently a junior with a 4.0 gpa and 35 ACT. Unfortunately LSU is stingy with in state full ride scholarships so I may try to get her to consider other out of state institutions

I’d be surprised if she doesn’t get a full scholarship to LSU with those accomplishments. If that doesn’t cut it, what does?

Yeah hopefully so. She wants to go to medical school so LSU is the one she has her heart set on

This. My son was down to MSU, Auburn and Alabama. He chose Bama but if Auburn was best for him, so be it.

Going to LSU on a full ride was the best decision I’ve ever made. Graduating totally debt free is a huge leg up in life.

Eh, I think there is a lot more to the college experience than just getting the piece of paper at the end. Motivated, smart people that apply themselves in fields that pay a decent wage are going to be fine financially (debt or no debt).
I’m generally in the camp of go to the best possible school. The exit opportunities whether for graduate school or the workforce provide option value that is difficult to quantify. If you want to stay in a local market and build a life there then it may make sense to do be cost conscious and stay local. Again, I bias towards what can wedge an opportunity that otherwise might be closed even for a high achiever.

I think that makes it lot of sense if the costs are similar. But there are places where the combination of tuition plus living expenses are over 80k a year.
You can't justify 320k for undergrad and then potentially hundreds of thousands more for graduate school. Tuition has gotten way too out of control to be reasonable without significant scholarships. I frankly question the public value of the publicly funded schools (which also functionally includes private universities) when the cost is out of reach for all but the more affluent.
