My current situation is an older truck (2009) essentially needing a new motor. It was determined after labor costs it would make more since to just do a new motor swap.
With that said, my two current options are to put a re-man motor in the truck with a warranty for close to $10k, or sell and get whatever I can, and buy a different used vehicle.
Being a pretty recent college grad my used car/truck budget would not be great, potentially around $20k or less. Any advice or similar experiences?

If you're just trying to get out of it as cheap as you can, you aren't going to find another truck that's reliable for $10k and $20k may even get you something unreliable. The motor is the most expensive part of a vehicle, and you'll have a new one. Guessing the engine doesn't come with a transmission, but that would be the only other thing that costs a decent amount to replace.
If your truck is in good shape outside the engine currently, my $.02 is to put the engine in and drive it another 4 or 5 years until you get your career going and have some money for a new truck.

I think it would depend. It does currently run, but has knocking from lifters.
Could potentially get a few grand out of it to someone who wants to do the swap themselves or try to fix the issue. Overall truck value is probably $6-$7k before issues.

Is the truck in good enough condition otherwise? Still like driving it? If yes then that would be my answer in the current climate. Are you able to get another quote for the engine replacement?

I don't have any major complaints other than gas, but do prefer benefits of having a truck. It is in pretty goof condition otherwise, obviously some cosmetic problems with dents and scratches being old but never bothered me too much. I am currently reaching out for other quotes.

I would agree with the reliability considering most vehicles in my price range have a good bit of mileage already. Have been pretty much only looking for Toyota for that reason (4runner or Tacoma).
It is in decent condition on the outside, some noticeable dents and scratches and clear coat wearing down some areas. The transmission was my biggest concern, hoping it would be able to potentially last me these 4 years or so as you mentioned.

I would have to guess the value of your truck now compared to with a good motor has to be a difference of at least close to 10k.

Does the new one have to be a truck? You probably could get a decent used car for 15k -20k and save on gas too. Maybe upgrade to a truck in a few years.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a truck, I am not towing or using for work. I do like the benefit of having the truck when needed, and I like the space being a taller guy.

I’m with you on the truck aspect, but it’s way overrated from a utility perspective. You may be different, but I truly only NEED my truck once or twice per year.
I have a friend that got a company car and he asks to use my truck maybe once per year. If you have a friend or co-worker nearby with a truck that you could borrow, I wouldn’t worry about it.

This is a good point. Weighing options for if saving gas and buying a used car in my price range would be worth it.
Would still need to be midsize for comfort aspect.

I have a 2002 Chevy truck. At 200k miles my lifters started tapping loud. Like couldn’t order at McDonald’s drive through loud because couldn’t hear. I talked to mechanic and he told me to change oil and use Shell Rotella heavy duty diesel oil. If I wouldn’t have seen it all myself I wouldn’t have believed it. The knocking totally went away. I now have 365k miles on truck and still going with no knock. Don’t know if it would work with your truck but sure worked with mine.

That's interesting. I would say I could look into trying it but it leaks oil so bad it would just about all be gone driving it down the street to test out

If you're going the reman motor route, get the cost in writing noting what the installation includes or doesn't include. It's easy to nickel and dime the cost into a few hundred bucks for things such things as belts, hoses, mounts, brackets, break-in fluids, etc.

I was in your situation about four years ago. 12-year-old truck in solid shape, engine croaked with 180k miles.
I weighed buying a new truck where my trade-in was worth scrap price versus spending $5k for a rebuilt engine. If the truck/new engine lasted more than $5k/monthly note, I would come out ahead.
4 years later truck still runs, and the avoided car note goes into the bank.

5k certainty sounds more manageable than the quotes I have received. Did you go the re-man route?

Look at places that have wrecked cars/trucks.
I blew up a Pathfinder and found an Infinity motor at the junk yard, got about 7 years out of it

Yep, went with a remanufactured engine. Runs great, only issue is a small leak on the rear main seal.
If I had it to do over I would get a Goodwrench reman engine.
ETA - this work was done in 2020, just before the pandemic began. Just the engine (an LY5 in my case) is now $5600 +/-.
