I liked when he wore that ponytail on the very top of his head for about a year

When I play and I miss my first serve, I feel like I can make the necessary adjustments based on what I did wrong on the first attempt to get the second serve in. Perhaps he felt the same way.

I used to play with a buddy that had that cut serve and it was brutal

he is RH, I am RH and when he hit it, it wouid kick my left to right

it would hit the ground and make a turn in the air and I would just flail

slide over and then he would blister one to my backhand side

He wasn't the only one that did that in that era. Sampras would do that and in big spots quite frequently. Groan was a whale of a server, and his motion was almost what I would call abbreviated, it was so fast and with a ball toss that almost didn't look right for a guy that size. Man I loved that era.

That’s what made Sampras great.: going for those big second serves at critical times.

They were still spinning it on second serves. Quicker racquet speed but keeping the ball in by brushing it.

ANALytics. If he faulted the 1st serve then it was statistically probable he would not fault the second. fwiw - I made that up I could care less about people hitting a ball over a net

Did you miss the part where he clearly said he was kidding?

Sampras really didn't "go for big second serves" so much as his second serve was just fricking amazing.

I loved his service motion. It was so natural.

That being said, Sampras had the most perfect service motion I've ever seen.

Because the biggest part to Goran’s game was his serve if I remember correctly. Take his serve away and he was a middle of the pack at best pro tennis player. I am sure he felt several players actually had an advantage against him if he gave them a returnable second serve………Agassi comes to mind immediately.

It’s a strategy that pays off when your opponent knows the 2nd serve is going to be just as hard or harder as the first. And it’s not that low of a percentage shot at higher levels. Muscle memory plays a large part as well. When you try to take 10-15mph off your serve, your muscles can misfire and the ball can go long or hit the tape. On the other hand, when your muscles are trained to fire in a certain sequence for max power repetitively, hard 2nd serves land in more than you think.

But if you’re having a bad day, you’re fked

I sat court level at the 1996 Olympics watching Goran play doubles. When he served, the sound the ball made whizzing through the air was pretty incredible. I played a lot of youth tournaments and played in high school. I returned a lot of 115-120mph serves. 135+ was a whole different animal. I think I would’ve just ducked.

I believe the last live tennis match I’ve been too was some 20 years ago between Goran and Courier.

It was awesome. I was a teen though and didn’t fully appreciate just how cool it was. Sadly I no longer live in a city with a decent men’s tournament.

What a random arse thread.

But man, these names have me reminiscing big time. 90s-to-early-00s tennis was awesome and fun as frick to watch. I used to love watching Agassi, Sampras, Chang, Goran, etc. It was also fun to have Americans kicking arse as well, which hasn't been the case for a long arse time now. I know Chang never won much, but I used to love watching that dude chase down balls all over the place.

We don’t swing any softer on our second serve than our first. No top level player does. We simply hit a kick serve to give a larger margin of error. For Goran, and players like him, they have enough height to where hitting a flatter serve still has a high enough margin for error. Going for the flat serve twice isn’t that dangerous
