re: College football is dying a slow death

Welcome to semi-pro football - greed is destroying the sport
And this is the crux of the matter. Every minor change to the sport since the 80s has led to this. It started with the CFA lawsuit which forbade the NCAA from limiting the amount of televised games a team could play in during a given year. This opened the door for the conferences to sign their own television contracts to bring more money and exposure to their schools. This seemed like a good idea at the time, but this would end up leading to an explosion in the amount of money dumped into the athletics department.
Then you had the rise of ESPN in the 90s and the "Quest for #1" which began with the advent of the Bowl Coalition. It wasn't just enough to beat your rival and go to a good bowl game anymore. Now you had to always be competing for a national championship. The Bowl Championship Series brought more money and exposure to the sport of college football, increasing the amount of money dumped into the game with the assistance of an ascendant ESPN.
Colleges began dumping more and more money into their football program thanks to these sweet new TV deals the conferences made with the television networks. Head coaches saw their salaries continue to rise and, as all of this was happening, everyone started to ask why the student-athletes weren't seeing any returns on the multi-billion dollar deals that were being made on behalf of their play on the field.
College football should have remained as it was in the 70s and 80s. We should have been forced to listen to our favorite team play on the radio with only one or two televised appearances a year to keep us satisfied. If this had happened, all the greed we see in the sport now would not exist.

Been telling everyone this for well over a decade now.
CFB is about to become EXACTLY what the media/ESPN wants it to be: Just a few blue bloods dominating everything.
Your first clue it was done was when they dropped the "Every Game Counts" Slogan after a blue blood lost the "Game of the Century" and the media brought back the "eye test".
Those that run CFB have been blatantly rubbing HUGE double standards in your faces for decades, yet you've ignored them at your own peril.
Everything about the sport is, and always will be, a beauty pageant where a few teams run things, play by their own rules/standards, while 120 other programs just patiently wait their turn every few years.
Don't worry though: if another blue blood like Bama or USC happens to lose some games they shouldn't, they will expand the playoffs again or just remove conference title games. It will always be something to cater to these teams. All NIL is doing is shining a light on what has always been.

Watching the melt from old-timers on here over NIL is hilarious.

Slow? How fast do planes missing a wing fall out of the sky?

I already am rapidly losing interest. I hate pro sports, and that's exactly what CFB is becoming. California literally ruins everything.

Can someone explain to me why Florida QB is transferring after the bowl game but gets to start that said Bowl game? How does that make any sense.

He’s in the portal not committed elsewhere?

Regardless of whether or not someone hates pro sports, this is the point a lot of the types disagreeing with the OP either don’t get or think about. The NFL has clearly superior play. There’s no doubt the players are better and more developed. Despite worse play, CFB has a following because it’s different. If CFB becomes more like the NFL, it’s losing the appeal it once had and just becomes a worse product of the same thing.

Exactly. P5 AAA baseball, G5 AA, everyone else A

Just not that fun anymore
This is the NFL in my opinion. I can barely stomach Saints games but I could care less than less about watching any other NFL games.

Unpopular opinion is correct. Pretty much the usual on this board. If the rest of the SEC was worth a shite no one would be screaming it's the end of the world.

Wait until Jeff Bezos creates Amazon University and buys the greatest college football team ever.
All the SEC money won't be able to overcome that.

Why would bezos want a college team?

Not really it’s just changing. Remember when the NFL let free agents move to any team of their choosing?

LSU will be fine. I don't understand why y'all have this attitude about NIL.

Just a few years ago, NASCAR was huge! Then they changed the rules, and then went woke. Now they are a shell of their former selves. I can see the same thing happening to college football if they keep going down this path.

Comparing NASCAR to CFB? Seriously?

quote:You can't see how NIL will and can irreparably change the sport? Used to be, a kid signed with a school for a few different reasons. Wanted to win. Wanted a good education. Wanted a spotlight in order to maybe get to the next level. Now it will come down to who can offer the best NIL deal. Schools with the boosters willing to shell out the big bucks will load up on talent, and those schools will dominate recruiting, and CFB, with average coaching. There's a reason why the NFL went to a salary cap a long time ago.
