How does the process of taking away someone's Heisman trophy work?

Does someone just show up at your door with guns drawn and asks that you give it back? Once it's given to you are you not the owner of it forever? I'm just confused on why Reggie Bush gave his trophy back. I would have just told them to frick off if it were me.
