Adam Gase has been planning for months as coach of the Dolphins -- and for over a year before he became an NFL head coach -- how he would handle something that seems so mundane to the rest of the world as a rookie minicamp. And he's got ideas. And he's implementing those this week.

And they will not include actual practices on the field.

Instead Dolphins rookies will spend all their time during this minicamp in classroom sessions learning how to be Miami Dolphins. That means they're going to get schooled on the schemes they're playing, their assignments, and everything football that involves the brain.

But they're also going to get a little polished up as people. They're going to get life labs to help them with nutrition, financial planning, sports science, and dealing with the media -- the last of which is a big part of their job believe it or not.

so pretty much show a video of Tunsil's draft night and tell their rookies that is basically what not to do

Mental training and playbook/scheme and how to be a professional is a great strategy. Nice to see someone have their own ideas.

If you are an UDFA, you hate this. You now have an extremely limited number of reps to prove that you deserve to make the team.

Don't most teams do this already?

I'm not sure if individual teams do it, but the NFL does have a rookie symposium that covers these topics

Great idea. I hope the execution is good too. These guys really need to learn how to protect themselves and their money.

i like the idea of individual teams doing it. you can talk about living in the area, culture of the area, etc. really tailor it to the team and region. and it will be a lot easier to pay attention in a room of 20 people than a room of 500+

Nobody makes a team/gets cut during walk-throughs wearing helmets, tshirts and shorts.

They won't get high priority UDFAs in the future because of this.

But its still a good idea in most ways.

Not anymore.

quote:

The symposium, which brought every drafted player to one central location to learn about the off-field issues relevant to playing pro football, took some criticism when it was revealed that Cris Carter told rookies they should get a fall guy to take the blame if they get into trouble with the law. But that’s not why the NFL says the program is going away.

Instead, the league says that a new rookie transition program will be hosted by each of the 32 teams, provide local resources for a transition into the NFL, and carry the added benefit of including both drafted players and undrafted rookies.

It seems like the Dolphins are going a step further and doing even more and starting earlier.

I'm not sure what you're smirking at. Its probably true. It will hurt them a little with UDFAs and try out players.

And I said right after it its still a good idea.

Aren't rookie traning camps just walk throughs with helmets and no pads anyway? No contact, no games, just half speed plays and repetition.
