The Red Sox have found a loophole for MLB’s new shift rule. And Joey Gallo, whom Boston tested it against in a spring training game Friday, still needs to learn how to not pull the ball so much.

When Gallo — the former Yankees outfielder now with the Twins — strolled to the plate, the Red Sox positioned center fielder Adam Duvall in shallow right field and slid Raimel Tapia from left to center, according to the Bally Sports broadcast.

They kept their right fielder in his traditional spot, give or take a few steps.

And the Red Sox also ensured that they remained compliant with MLB’s new shift rules, which keeps two infielders on each side of second base and was intended to prevent teams from stacking their position players against lefties.

Joey Gallo

He thought it was over.

And I don't feel bad for him. They're literally giving him all of left field because they're so convinced he's going to pull the ground ball between first and second. Find a way to get better and hit it to left.

That’s extremely risky though compared to an infield shift

And the reasons batters wouldn’t just bunt for a single against the infield shift was because of analytics

But now, a poke to left is a HR or double at worst. This won’t work long term

And it’s not terribly easy to go the other way you’re getting jammed inside with 98

You wont see it too often. The risk of a single is whatever, the risk of triple is a lot worse

Yea you likely only see this for players that just absolutely refuse to try and go the other way.

MLB has become a joke. These new rules show one thing, that the players are extremely limited. Nobody ever wanted a league where we see Rob Deer vs Mark Wohlers 27 times a game but that’s what we’ve got.

I wish more people wouldn’t completely disregard this.

I know, I’m a dinosaur, I just don’t see where the game is better off. Where are these rules helping? The games are getting longer as they try to shorten them. Teams are scoring less as offense is promoted. We’re getting an assembly line SPAM product that lacks active and essential areas of the game then we wonder why it’s losing popularity and star power.

I want MLB to keep the shift. Why should the fielding team be penalized because the hitters suck and refuse to broaden their skillset?

Let this sport die if hitters can't figure this out.

Games are so boring now and MLB can't figure out decent rule changes, ever.

Mind numbing watching a team vacate half the field and a guy refuses to learn how to bunt or poke it to the other side.

These guys get paid millions, and can't go opposite field. Let the sport die.

MLB is a joke because they keep trying to cater to people that don’t watch. I realize the pace of the game doesn’t mesh well with the younger generation, but I’m not sure adding clocks is the way to go.

I wouldn’t care if they split screen commercials when they come back to the game. You could shave 30 seconds each half inning. Just don’t do it in the 9th so a pivotal homer won’t be missed.

Do players really need to toss around a ball every half inning to warm up?

As for the style of play…I think analytics is having a negative impact on offense/defense balance and entertainment, but that’s a personal preference.

Nothing is easy against 98. That's part of the game. You can back off from the plate, bunt, etc. Supposedly the best hitters on the planet. Let them figure it out.

Agree with everything you said. First off the timing issue, as they’ve tried to speed up the game the games are taking longer. Games from the juiced era were lasting 2 hours and 47 to 57 minutes, since 2016 games have lasted over 3 hours each year. The rules are having the opposite effect and it ties into your point about analytics. Runs are down as well. From 1993-2009 the lowest RPG avg was 9.18, since then in 8 of the last 12 seasons RPG avg has been below 9rpg. So they’re selling the public one story while the actual data says the complete opposite. Analytics is not about scientific or calculated baseball, it’s about saving money and cost cutting.

With Gallo at the plate all you really need a pitcher and catcher. It’s either going to be a K or a HR.
