yeah Lucas Black has probably the most reliable, legitimate southern accent, although it's used for everything from North Carolina to West Texas when it's clearly Alabama. but to everyone else in the country, we're all just interchangeable uneducated hicks, so whatever.
also, agreed about Jude Law in Cold Mountain - decent accent and underrated flick IMO. Nicole Kidman's accent in it isnt terrible either. Rene Zellweger's on the other hand...oof.

Hahaha good one. Her accent literally comes and goes throughout the movie.
Still love that movie though, despite it being pretty objectively stupid.

I know McCoughnahey is kind of cheating since he wqs raised in Carthage, Texas, but his accent in Mud is about as good as authentic of an S Ark/East Texas/NW LA accent you're ever going to get.
Obviously Billy Bob is dead on as well. His accent in Tombstone and Hearts Afire is the truest accent he had when he was younger.

When I want the worst accents, I go to a K-Ville gumbo party.

One of the best, is Wayne Duvall (Robert Duvall's brother) in Brother, Where Are Thou. The guy is from Maryland, and he sounds like he climbed out of the bayou in that movie.

When I was a kid I saw on TV a terrible movie version of Falkner's The Sound And The Fury, w/Yul Brynner (!) & Joanne Woodward.
Even as a young teen I was sick of bad Southern accents, but I was very impressed by Woodward. I specifically recall how she pronounced "doesn't" as "dudden".
I didn't know she was from Georgia & went to LSU.

Ryan Kwanten was surprisingly good…for the most part.
Rutina Wesley is my nomination for worst.

Worst ever was Dennis Quaid in the Big Easy

I can always tell when actors did little research on what a true cajun accent sounds like. All they have to go do is hang out in Lafayette for a week. They always assume it has a southern drawl like the rest of the south but it doesn't. You can fake it pretty much by never pronouncing the "th" sound. Use a hard T sound for TH at the end of the word and a Hard D for a TH at the beginning of a word and you pretty much can get away with it with just that. No fake drawl necessary.
And you are correct a True new Orleans accent is closer to NY/NJ think is a port city thing. But Hollywood forbid they try to be accurate.

The family on Young Sheldon actually sound like they could be from Texas.

You've obviously not seen the made for TV movie "Of Mice and Men" where he plays Lenny, the mentally challenged man-child friend of George, played by Gary Sinise.
He is great in that part and they both put in the best performances in their adaptation of the Steinbeck novel.
I've seen every production of it over the years and theirs is hands down the best.

i am an unashamed fan of Kevin Costner in almost every role he has played, but his generically southern accent in JFK (and other movies) is borderline highschool drama club quality.
i think he does a better job with that annoying sixties era northeast accent as Kevin Oconnel in Thirteen Days, but i suspect someone from that area feels the same way about it as i do about his southern accent.

Hot take, but Jude Law's accent in Cold Mountain isn't that bad.
Jude Law’s accent in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, however….
