I've taken an interest in Pre-Code films, particularly those featuring Joan Blondell. Broadway Bad touches on several controversial topics, many of which would not find their way onto the silver screen for many years.

The film dealt with themes such as prostitution and out-of-wedlock childbirth.

I still have a copy of the film on VHS, which I'd taped off a Houston station back around 1990 or 1991. It's a very rarely shown film. It was part of a batch of about 50 old Fox Films (pre-20th Century Fox) that wasn't made available for tv-syndication until the 1970s. But since by that time the films were deemed old and creaky, and the prints were often on the weak side, this little syndicated package didn't circulate much. Most of the films have remained rather scarce to this day.

The package of Fox Films also included the excellent "Zoo in Budapest" (1933) and "The Yellow Ticket" (1931). Along with a few racy pre-codes like "Pleasure Cruise" (1933) and "Sailor's Luck" (1933). The Clara Bow drama "Call Her Savage" (1932) was included, too, but that one at least got a dvd release. The package also included the weird sci-fi musical comedy "Just Imagine" (1930),. And also "Blood Money" (1933), which offered a rare bad-girl role for Frances Dee. Lots of other Fox films in this vein. But the vast majority have never been seen on tv since. Not TCM or anywhere. Sometimes someone puts a copy of an old off-air recording on Youtube or something, though. Early Fox Film talkies (1929-35) are an interesting batch. Lots of very good films, but hard to see.

I have found several Pre-Code films on youtube.com, including Broadway Bad. They are sometimes scratchy and jumpy, but they are such a treasure I can put up with the inconvenience.
