I truly wtf'd after the ghost of John Bel Hood showed up, played by Levon Helm.

Figure some of yall may have been around when it was filmed in Louisiana.

Haven't seen that in a long time, need to revisit it. Wish they would make more movies based on Burke's books.

When they were filming here in New Iberia back in 2008-2009, I remember John Goodman having dinner every night at a local sushi restaurant downtown polishing off a fifth of Jack Daniels in one sitting, he would occasionally have a conversation, but by the end of dinner he was smashed. Tommy Lee Jones actually rented a camp out of Cypremort Point while filming here, the couple times I met him, he was a complete D-bag, Goodman however was the life of the party...

I'd love to see AppleTV produce a series based off of Burke's Robicheaux series. Would be a great pairing with the upcoming Bad Monkey series based on Hiaasen works.

I thought it was a decent movie, but I've read all of James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels. I don't believe this movie was ever released in theaters, it went directly to cable and dvd.

I thought Tommy Lee Jones played Dave Robicheaux just as JLB created him. Great that Dave Goodman was in this flick, but I always envisioned him as Clete (whose character was not in this book or movie.)

You're right. Goodman would be a perfect Clete.

That was Levon's last film performance in 2009.He has an impressive filmography, when considering the quality of the films. His 1st role in a non-documentary/concert film was Loretta Lynn's father in Coal Miner's Daughter. Guess you could say he was the Coal Miner.

Biggest movies on his filmography:

The Last Waltz
Coal Miner's Daughter
The Right Stuff
Feeling Minnesota
Fire Down Below
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada
Shooter

His Wikipedia page

Awesome musician and singer who had a full life.

I like Peter skarsgard but his lines in this movie in some scenes were terrible.

I really enjoy this movie though. The narration, music, and atmosphere of most scenes are done really well.

Knew about the book, but did not know this movie existed; was intrigued after reading all the comments from you baws... I found it for free on Plex via Cox Cable and watched it tonight.

It was entertaining, and it's always cool to see south Louisiana in movies, but some of the acting was pretty bad-- particularly the black musician (Hog-Man). And the follow-up at the end (what happened to some of the characters) seemed a little forced and extraneous.

But overall, I did enjoy it - nice way to spend a chill Friday night at home. Thanks to the OP and the rest for bringing it to my attention.
