Thought same when reading the book. They talked about that heat tape a bunch then, oh.

No, they did not cover all of the first book.

Just watched the last episode. The heat tape was obviously significant but what exactly did it do? I was thinking it was meant to fail so they could gas her or something, but there was never any indication of anything being used against her.

did anyone catch the bombed out city off in the distance as she looked around?

Spoilers about episode 10 below.

They must have something come out and the better tape stopped it. Just because we can't see it doesn't mean they don't have gas or something come out. Now the number 18 has to mean they are 18 of alot of silos. That has to be a lot of bombing to make it all look like that, nukes maybe ? Could explain why they have to live down there.

And it looks like they are surrounded by other siloes all next to each other.

Yeah they didn’t really explain it. It is deadly out there. They were never lying about that. The fake image in the helmet was to insure they would clean. They used the crap heat tape on the suits knowing it would fail and they would die within minutes. See them get hit with hot gas and heat as they exit, that expedites the failure. They need it to fail in a few minutes so they don’t find out the truth about the other silos.

Thinking about watching this, I'm assuming with the length of the thread this is a good show?

The bodies are there. What she was seeing was a hologram of the rock.

I remember the hologram piece, but when it cuts to the actual destruction, I didn't notice a pile of suits from previous cleaners

I never thought about the fake image being projected inside the helmet. It’s gonna be very interesting when she pops up on camera at another silo.

I may have to read the books given the writer strike likely has season 2 two years out. Over all I really liked the show. Its not perfect but had all episodes been available at the start it would have been worthy of a binge watch.

... spoiler ... theory below

I'm not convinced the bodies were still there given they didn't specifically show them... I wonder if there is a group that comes and scoops them up and deposits them in a separate silo half dead... thats where my heads out

I was reading recaps and this is what most are saying: IT used inferior heat tape for those who clean that would not keep the toxins out of the suit. That way they die quickly and no one else wants to go outside save for a few one offs. By using the "good" heat tape that may or may not have been modified by the old lady the suit is holding up.

So it seems outside really is dangerous and the displays are accurate. Bernard seems to know everything or at least a lot more while Sims knew nothing about outside. 18 is probably the number of their silo among dozens or more (is the hard drive being 18 too a coincidence or significant?). It also appears the silos have some kind of contact with each other...probably a "Bernard" in each silo.

I truly didn't know if Juliette was going to live or die. On one hand she's the main character. On the other she's a pretty big actress now who may have only signed up for one season. It seems pretty clear the Sheriff and his wife (not small actor names) actually died. I thought for sure they survived and would come back.

One thing I'm not clear on is how many people have cleaned? They make it seem like it's rare but has happened because they state no one had ever not cleaned. But then where are all of the bodies? As far as I know we've only seen the Sheriff and wife still out there. I believe the revolution was 140 years ago. That's not enough time for the bodies and suits to decompose for other cleaners. And we didn't see bodies on the other side of the hill (plus Bernard freaked out when she looked like she was going to make it over the hill). I'm probably overthinking it but I feel like something's missing there.

I know a lot on this board lost interest in the show. I love it and stayed fascinated the whole time. My only real complaint is I wish we got a bit more explanation of what's going on before we take a big break between seasons. It's going to be hard for me not to jump into the books before that just to see what's going on. I don't want to do that because I'm sure the show is going to be somewhat different from the books and I would rather keep them separate in my mind.

They could done all of Wool and wrapped that up and started the next book for the next season, but where they stopped is a huge cliffhanger so I’m sure they wanted that all along instead of that happening during the season.

Where would the books align for where they stopped season 1 ?

Is it like 1/2 or 3/4 of the way through the first book ?

We're probably on book 3 or 4. The first book was covered by episode 1. In the omnibus of wool probably between half and 3/4.
