Good question, I see both sides. I think probably the answer is that they were AOR with southern roots and influences. Sure they had Donnie Van Zandt but really their big hits were with Don Barnes on lead vocals, who leans more into AOR. During Barnes's hiatus they really leaned more into AOR and there really wasn't much at all Southern Rock in their sound.

The answer to the OP is Skynyrd for sure.
ETA: I think a really solid debate could be held about who is #2. If we’re saying ABB not included based on the “jam band” aspect, there would be some other great candidates, namely Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and The Outlaws. I love all three but would have to go with Molly Hatchet.

Skynyrd by a mile. You can throw in 38 Special and maybe the Doobie Brothers but none compare to LS

Skynard us 1. But my favorite is Molly Hatchet. Was a junior in high school when their first album dropped.

It's Skinny Leonard and AB are a close second. Lot of other good bands mentioned in this thread. I'm gonna add Bachman Turner Overdrive to the Convo. They were a Canadian southern rock band and did a damn good job of it. Frank Turner had a great southern rock voice.

Skynyrd and Allmans are on a pedestal. Current bands carrying on that sound are Blackberry Smoke, Whiskey Myers, Georgia Thunderbolts and The Steel Woods among others.

Skynyrd when they used Marshall and Hiwatt amps - before their Peavey endorsement. Awful sounding amps, imho.

I think LS are a more pure southern rock band than ABB if you were trying to strictly define it. ABB isn't not southern rock, but to me I don't really see Skynyrd and ABB as that similar.

Agree with this 100%. If Skynyrd is Southern Rock, then ABB is 1A.

Seems like you would have to define what Southern Rock is first, but without that, my take:
LS wore there southerness like a badge (album covers, rebel flags, song titles like Sweet Home Alabama). They made a conscience effort to fly their "flag".
ABB was more about musicianship and the sounds that they made, with a tip of the hat to the old time gods of blues.
Their lyrics in large part were about the simple ups and downs of life.
LS proudly proclaimed who they were.
ABB never proclaimed a damn thing. They just played.
Both were great, but:
LS = Pamela Anderson
ABB = Jacqueline Bissett

Soooo I’ll wholeheartedly endorse skynyrd as the archetype with ABB as the foil to that…
But hear me out… did skynyrd get so over the top iconic that someone else should be the definitive player of a regional genre?
In the sense that I hear skynyrd out and about and I could be anywhere but if I hear… I don’t know… Molly hatchet? Odds are I’m Deep South and getting a more authentically southern experience?
Does some degree of not being the face of the scene help make someone in the second cut more dyed in the wool authentic to experience as defining the it?
But hear me out… did skynyrd get so over the top iconic that someone else should be the definitive player of a regional genre?
