I am completely envisioning two methy dudes with a sawz all and some bolt cutters felling that thing in the dark and yelling TIMBER while laughing to themselves.

People saying cranes and crew are envisioning taking it down so it could be used again. I am betting this was a scrap operation from the get go and they just let it fall and then chopped it up.

People are also underestimating Walker county meth heads.

You're thinking of the wrong type of tower. That is likely an 18 or 24-inch footprint galvanized tower that bolts up in 10-foot sections. They could easily climb, unbolt sections, and have that down in a few hours. Or used one of the guy wires to tie off to a truck and then back it down if they had the laydown room and unbolt sections (or sawzall) even quicker.

I’m surprised they didn’t find wreckage and a few bodies. I bet those lines under tension could do some damage.

At least your story made sense.

200 ft. Radio antenna stolen

cant happen without spending a week on site there at a minimum.

there would be at least a 6-10 man work crew, cranes rented and delivered to the site, and about 15 separate 18 wheeler flatbed trucks to load it up and haul it off.

then wherever it went you cant hide it and would be very easy to find by an airplane search.

as others have said, this was an inside job all the way

That's my assumption, too. But it would seem like they'd see evidence of that by looking at the ground.

If the United States Air Force can lose a 20 millions dollar air craft inside the very country that its home to, a tower can easily go missing.

With that being said, was the 200 ft tower even in use?

It was a tower for an AM station. That means if it wasn't a satellite station then it was likely either just rebroadcasting the company's FM signal or the automation is just constantly playing some format like old country, gospel or news-talk (ie: something with no listeners at night). If it's owned in conjunction with an FM (which the story seems to hint) then it's kept around for advertising to be sold as a package "deal" (two stations instead of one).

Wouldn't it have been noticed when the tower "fell"?

Possibly. It likely happened in the dead of night though, so if it was close and loud enough to wake anyone then when they didn't hear anything else they probably went back to sleep.

If it's where I think it is, it's near a train track. If a train was coming through at the time then that would have helped cover for some of the sound of the tower coming down.

Can you get insurance on an antenna?

Yes - But I don’t know if theft would be a covered peril. Wind from a hurricane or tornado is usually what takes out an antenna and a claim is filed.

Replacing or repairing a cell phone antenna is spendy.
