Any of you ever think you were with "the one" then broke it off?

Seems like an impossibly tough decision in the moment that works out better for all parties involved in the long run. What's your story? How do you think it panned out in the long run?

Yes once. We were together for 3 years, the first 2.5 being good and the last 6 months being hell. The final straw was her chewing my arse for hugging a lifelong female friend of mine at my grandad’s funeral. He and I were extremely close and it hit me pretty hard. I broke up with her in the car ride back to Starkville and never looked back. She’s fat now

There are few things in life better than leaving someone because they were being an awful person and watching them get fat

Yeah, she came and told me she was having an emotional affair with another man. She said she hadn't slept with him, but I asked an internet message board for advice and they all said she was definitely getting poked.

I broke it off a few hours ago.

Yes, she did the break up. I was crushed and miserable and bitter for a long time.

Turns out, she did me a favor, and I found the real “one”.

Yeah. Dated a woman for 3 years. The first 2 years were great. Year 3 she started putting on weight and didn't stop. I was willing to absorb her student debt, and all of the other issues she had. Told her the weight would be an issue for me long term after watching my buddies wives blow up, then Loaf around and complain all the time. She pushed back and said she was a big woman, she will be big all her life and I will have to accept it. I ended it after suspecting her of talking with other men after I didn't propose.

Self preservation is always good. Someday you look back wonder why you ever cared.

My college gf after dating a year and then moving in together for 2 + more years decided to abort our baby.

No idea how her life is since. I have had a great life just never bothered to get that serious again and still wonder what it would be like to have a daughter and grandkids.

Broke up with "the [same] one" twice.

Married 35 years (third time was the charm).

Yeah. I was struggling money wise putting myself through school. We'd been together 1.5 years and she told me we were done if we weren't engaged in 6 months. I cut it off immediately. Worked out better for both parties. She was married within a year and had a kid within 2. I've ran in to her a couple of times and she seems happy. I'm married now and she's an upgrade for sure.
