Terrible accident is the simplest explanation.

There’s a view from the side where you can see it’s a warehouse on fire and there’s a bunch of small fires and smoke and then it explodes. It wasn’t a sudden bombing.

Some video of the streets after LINK

This looks like a commercial area, so probably not immediately by the port (but who knows).

Assuming that's correct, just shows the reach of the damage.

Looked like a ship on fire from the video that showed the little explosions and fire, which I assume are what is leading people to assume fireworks.

He may have made it (someone had to upload it unless it was a live stream), but I don’t think a lot of people in the vehicles on the road will have made it.

Twitter blue check:
quote:

Possible causes of Beirut explosion:
• Firecrackers exploded due to large and negligible production ( Al Jazeera)
• The warehouse was stored with benzene ( Al Mayeeden)
• A Hezbollah missile store was targeted near the Beirut port (Al Hadath)

Twitter says it was a cargo ship full of fireworks

That actually makes sense. A steel ship full of fireworks is like a apocalyptic sparkler bomb.

Jesus I just saw footage from A MILE AWAY which showed trucks and cars upside down and crushed from the explosion. Some of these cars were standing up in the air held up only by the front the bumper.
