Ukraine very much still needs to ration materiel. The first drawdown of $1 billion is fine, because it'll take us time to send that, but there will need to be another one in a few weeks. Ukraine's stocks were simply empty for a number of these items.

Reports are that a very substantial stockpile was waiting in Poland.

The Ukrainian military has reportedly pulled US-provided M1A1 Abrams tanks from the frontline in part because of the widespread threat of Russian drones and other strikes.

The US Army needs to take note, this is a tacit admission that the M1 is vulnerable to FPV drone attacks.

Warfare is changing in front of our eyes, at the start of the war 2 years ago, the type of drone warfare we now see, did not exist. Russian tanks are evolving to mitigate the threat. Here are two recent examples from the battlefield:

A bit more on the Abrams withdrawal

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ukraine has sidelined U.S.-provided Abrams M1A1 battle tanks for now in its fight against Russia, in part because Russian drone warfare has made it too difficult for them to operate without detection or coming under attack, two U.S. military officials told The Associated Press.

The U.S. agreed to send 31 Abrams to Ukraine in January 2023 after an aggressive monthslong campaign by Kyiv arguing that the tanks, which cost about $10 million apiece, were vital to its ability to breach Russian lines.

But the battlefield has changed substantially since then, notably by the ubiquitous use of Russian surveillance drones and hunter-killer drones. Those weapons have made it more difficult for Ukraine to protect the tanks when they are quickly detected and hunted by Russian drones or rounds.

Five of the 31 tanks have already been lost to Russian attacks.

Quite an illuminating statement. Perhaps you could explain Davydov's 811,000 subscribers, 922 daily videos with an average of 37k likes per day. If it's not too painful of course.

Two Wounded in ‘Massive’ Russian Attack on Electrical Grid, Kyiv Intercepts 21 of 34 Missiles

Two people were wounded after Russia launched a “massive attack” on energy infrastructure in Ukraine overnight from Friday to Saturday, Kyiv’s armed forces and local authorities said.

Ukraine’s Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, said the “massive” Friday-to-Saturday overnight strikes hit four power plants in three regions causing “severe damage” that will affect the electrical grid around the country, according to AFP reporting.

Russian forces launched a combined missile attack on Ukraine on the night of April 26-27, with Ukraine’s air defense forces intercepting 21 out of 34 targets.

Ukrainian Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk announced this on the Telegram messaging app, Ukrinform reported.

“Russian armed forces staged another massive missile attack on Ukraine,” the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) said in its regular morning update.

“The enemy used various types of missiles, including ballistic missiles, and Kharkiv, Kherson, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions were hit,” the AFU said.

Air Force Commander Oleshchuk said that in total, the enemy used 34 air-, ground- and sea-launched missiles:

Nine Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles launched from Tu-95MS strategic combers in Russia's Saratov region;
Nine Kh-59/Kh-69 guided aerial missiles launched from the Belgorod region and the Sea of Azov area;
Two S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles launched from Russia's Belgorod region;
Two Iskander-K cruise missiles launched from Crimea;
Four Kh-47M2 Kindzhal ballistic missiles fired from MiG-31Ks in Russia's Ryazan and Tambov regions;
Eight Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Black Sea area.

Ukrainian air defenders shot down 21 targets, including:

Six Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles;
Eight Kh-59/Kh-69 guided aerial missiles;
An Iskander-K cruise missile;
Six Kalibr cruise missiles.

Drones attack 2 oil refineries, bitumen factory and military airfield in Russia's Kuban – video
Ivashkiv Olena — Saturday, 27 April 2024, 05:48

A dozen UAVs attempted to attack an oil refinery, a bitumen factory and a military airfield in Russia’s Kuban on the night of 26-27 April.

Source: Veniamin Kondratyev, the governor of Russia’s Krasnodar Krai; TASS, a Kremlin-aligned Russian news outlet

Details: Kondratyev noted that more than 10 drones were suppressed in the Slavyansky, Seversky and Kushchovsky districts of Krasnodar Krai.

He also said that firefighters were extinguishing fires caused by the fall of the UAVs.

Later, the Head of the Slavyansky district of Krasnodar Krai added that a distillation column at the Slavyansk refinery was damaged during the drone attack.

Local residents said that the Ilsky Oil Refinery in the Seversky District of Krasnodar Krai was attacked. After the UAV attack, a fire broke out at the refinery, and it has almost been extinguished.

Updated: Ukraine’s Energy Ministry cited early reports indicating that strikes were conducted on the Slavyansk ECO oil refinery, a bitumen factory, the Ilsky oil refinery and several other facilities. Fires broke out at some scenes after the attack.

Following information from open sources, a military airfield in the town of Kushchevskaya in Krasnodar Krai also caught fire after a UAV attack.

Russian attacks against 4 Ukrainian regions kill 1, injure 14

by Dinara Khalilova April 27, 2024 1:04 PM

Russia’s recent attacks against Ukraine’s Kherson, Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts killed one person and wounded another 14, regional authorities reported early on April 27.

Russia attacked the southern city of Kherson and 13 other settlements in the region overnight and on April 26, killing one person and wounding another eight, according to Kherson Oblast Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.

The strikes against Kherson Oblast reportedly damaged two houses, critical infrastructure facilities, and civilian cars.

Russian forces struck a psychiatric hospital in Kharkiv overnight, injuring a 53-year-old female patient, Kharkiv Oblast Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported.

“At the time of the attack, 60 patients and five employees were in the medical building,” he said.

The Ilisky refinery was already having problems producing gasoline without Western expertise.

FWIW by bitumen they mean tar, refineries here call it asphalt which is different than asphalt concrete roadways.

Overnight, Ukrainian forces successfully struck Russia's Kushchyovskaya airbase in Krasnodar Krai.

At least one drone hit the vicinity of the flight line. Russian aircraft have reportedly been damaged, and footage shows a number of destroyed glide bomb kits.

Personally, I don't think that the tank is going away anytime soon, but I think that the tank of the future will have to have robust EW capabilities and likely a small, software-guided, anti-drone gun.

When we think about our own use of the M1, though, we have to remember that we would likely use them in the context of air superiority.

The blowout panels on the top rear is where the vulnerable spot is.

I don't have time to do links right now, but a rather typical night last night in the conflict:

- Russian missiles hit Ukrainian energy infrastructure in three different parts of Ukraine

- Ukrainian drones hit another Russian oil refinery and an airbase.

That’s by design. The blowout panels are located atop the ammunition storage rack. Due to the way the rear of the turret is designed, any ammunition detonation will be directed above and away from the crew compartment, thus allowing the crew to survive and the tank still be operable, at least to the point of being able to be driven back to safety. This is in contrast to Russian designs where an ammunition detonation results in the entire crew being incinerated and the turret being sent into orbit.
