I’ve always heard you have to be selected for another instrument before you could try out for drum line.
I made snare my Freshman year, along with a few others. One of the former year's snare drummers didn't make it and was put on cymbals instead.
I wouldn't say it was overly difficult. I was certainly no prodigy or anything. I learned the book front to back. Could play all the cadences with the CD. I put in about two weeks work of 3 hours a day on it I'd say.

A lot of drumline people do play other instruments that don't march (like bassoon or something) but they generally end up on cymbals or bass, not snare.
ETA: It was the same in high school so they all had experience.

Shoot I got the Golden Oaks scholarship that was specifically for out of state non-music majors and covered all out of state tuition - First year was 2009. Still had to try out every year and fortunate to make it every year. Back then cuts were BRUTAL for woodwinds

Should have cut them all.
I kid, I kid... but yeah supply and demand was not on your side.

Ehh, what you did is not easy. Anywhere, I’d imagine.
Did you stay on? DCI?

I don’t know if there’s a more good/bad movie than Drumline. I really love it and hate it.
Mostly net like it but not sure why.

And it wasn't $1,000 back then either, I think it was $640.
$640.00 was it if you made every practice and game. Forty bucks a week to match the maximum a student employee at LSU could get paid for a week. The idea was that band members ought to be compensated for putting in twenty hours of practice time per week and receiving only one hour credit for Tigerband for the semester.
It paid for our booze (which was much less expensive back then), so it was a good little bit of change for your back pocket.
I think Bengal Brass (the basketball band) paid either $5 or $10 per basketball game back in the 80s as well. It's been a long time though, and my memory is getting to be "presidential" these days.

Man - I think I probably know several of you
If you can play your arse off, you can get on a drum as a freshman.
It's fun. Enjoy it.

That makes zero sense
Contrary to what people on the drumline may say, they're just another section in the band.

With who?
When I marched with Southeastern we had a bunch of corps guys marching with us. They all tried to recruit me but that was way too much commitment.
We had a bells player name Donna from Jersey who marched with the Bayonne Bridgemen. She was hot AF.
We had some guys from The Crossmen, Phantom and The Madison Scouts. They all use to rag on each other. I always told them I wanted to see two nerds fight.

If they won championship and all, it was most likely Blue Devils, not to derail the thread.

Can you play through the cadence sequence? YouTube Have your rudiments down pat. Be able to learn on the fly. It wouldn't hurt to improve your sight reading abilities.
I just saw Whiplash couple nights ago.
I got dis.

The Cavaliers? Have a friend who was on the snare line there back in the 90's. Won a championship.

I was asked to try out for Cavaliers between HS and LSU, but opted to work instead. I doubt that I would have made the cut anyway.
