What strategies are the OTers using when buying a new ride these days. I’m about to buy a new truck and have been “out of the game” for a while.

Internet pricing?
Go in and haggle?

Etc etc etc

FWIW......I’m likely going to be buying an F150 in at least a lariat package. I’d like to get a 2018 but would be open to 2017.

ETA: I’ll also be buying in the DFW area.

If you want the best price, buy a 2017. Dealers are going to FAR more motivated to move the 2017 than they are the 2018.

As for price, first of all don't let them trick you into bundling everything into a "how mud do you want your monthly payment to be " conversation.

Negotiate the price of their vehicle
Then negotiate any value on a trade in (if you have one)
then discuss financing options.

As for what you should pay.

If you really want to throw them for a loop, go in with cash and tell them you want to pay FULL STICKER and not one penny less.

It works.

Go to Money Board. Look for the "Will Cover method". Baw wrote the book on buying cars, and gives tips on how to be successful as a former car salesman

Negotiate off the invoice price, not MSRP. Negotiate price separate from financing. Lock in the price you want, then go on to financing. Don't let them try to do both at the same time.

Bought a 2017 gmc sierra slt a month ago.

Sticker 56k

With rebates and me jewing the dealer down i got him to 41k, then he gave me an extra 6k on payoff for my 2014 silverado. So in the end financed 35k on a 56k (stickered) truck.

My sticker was just under $30k. Got it down to $22k, invoice was $23k, got $10k for a 10 year old tundra with a broken A/C and in need of new shocks and brakes. Walked out for $12k

Anyone you can recommend? This kind of a service would be very attractive. I remember reading about a similar service on Jalopnik a while back when I was in market for a new car but bought used instead.

Internet research. Check around Dallas or Houston. Print off the ones you want. Walk into dealership and say you are going to Texas tomorrow to grab "this truck" but want to give the local guy the opportunity.

I got exactly what I wanted at the price I wanted and didn't have to argue anything.

I also went at the end of the day, early week, end of the month.

I might come buy my next vehicle in TN just to get you to do it and me watch you. It is fascinating.
