If there’s one thing Gen Z knows how to do, it’s setting trends.

We’ve had “everything showers”, “bed rotting”, even “bare minimum Mondays” – which have been adopted to varying degrees of social media fanfare.

And now the latest Gen Z “movement” taking the youngest generation by storm is, ironically, not that new at all.

They call it “silent walking”, that is: going for a walk without their phones, or without listening to music, podcasts, or any sort of technological distraction.

Podcaster Mady Maio takes credit for “unintentionally starting a movement” that, she promises, will “change your life”.

In a video on Tiktok, she explains her boyfriend was the one who first challenged her to take a walk without any distractions.

quote:

“No AirPods, no podcasts, no music. Just me, myself, and I,” she said in the video, which has now gained almost 500,000 views.

“And at first I was like f**k no, my anxiety could never – which is probably what you’re thinking – but something within me was like let me just try it.”

Maio said the first two minutes of her walk were “mayhem”, until she hit a “flow state”, when “suddenly you can … hear yourself.”

quote:

“Look, the universe and your intuition comes to you through whispers, so if you’re never alone with your thoughts and you never get quiet you’re gonna miss the whispers,” she said.

“And those whispers are the most important to be paying attention to.”

Maio said silent walking gave her the “clarity” she had always been looking for.

So did these intrepid youngsters just redefine an ancient human behavior known as "walking" as something new?

I hope these silent walks end at the employment office.

I love all the shitting Boomers do on younger generations

However Gen Z grew up in a time where the internet is not only mainstream the internet is as pervasive and accessible as running water.

Kids these days get an iPad shoved in their face the minute they start fussing.

Deconnecting like this is actually a pretty deliberate task for them to do.

New for them, and that’s fine. It’s sad that things have gotten to the point where “walking in silence” needed to be rediscovered, but it’s a good thing.

With all of that said, it genuinely surprises me how many people, like that person, think that the constant barrage of stimuli helps them cope with their anxiety instead of realizing it’s likely the cause of it.

It’s also incredibly beneficial. In the height of irony I was listening to a podcast where the host was extolling the benefits of working out/exercising without music or a podcast. Just you and your thoughts.

But how will I record my steps or live post my walk so everyone knows I walked?

Sad reality is there are a lot of people that live in the fear of what they may possibly miss if they unplug. And this isn't just the younger generation. When I get home from work, I put my phone on the table and don't touch it until it's time for the kids to unwind as we begin the various bedtime routines (exceptions for when wife is away from the house). I have older people in my life that do not understand this and go crazy if I don't answer their calls or immediately respond to their texts.

Bed Rotting is simply just spending the day in bed doing absolutely nothing; and not necessarily sleeping. Our parents just referred to us as couch potatoes when we did it.

Not googling everything showers either, just know it requires you to spend an extended amount of time in the shower. Presumably to do everything.

I'm damn near 50, I walk 20 to 25 miles a week and never have devices or headphones on. This isn't a generational thing.

Glad to see that your HOA's "No Distracted Walking" Initiative is having early success.

If there’s one thing Gen Z knows how to do, it’s rehashing and renaming trends.

They try to make normal everyday activities "trendy."

Like that isn’t a two-way street.
