Is it a weekend and you aren't doing anything? sure why not

Can you make the trip enjoyable somehow?

What am I doing with that 7 hours if I opt to not do it?

Have to consider opportunity cost.

Once I drove to Bastrop (125 miles) to buy a deer stand that was $200 off regular price.(Simmons Sporting Goods). Some dipshirt bashed in fender of my truck in parking lot,I had $500.00 deductible, cost me $450.00 to get it fixed.I came out $250.00 in the hole.??

$599 vs $300

Can't ship, too large and heavy.

Okay, so $300/7 is $40 which isn't terrible.

No one has brought up opportunity cost yet, a frequent omission and the most important economIcally.

If you make more than ~$40/hour, it would be foolish to give up earning $40+ REAL dollars to avoid spending $40/hour (keeping $300 already in your pocket). Go earn $320 in a day, spend the $300 extra to buy the widget and you’re still in the black.

This is almost equivalent of standing in line for 7 hours to get a free pizza that’s worth $7.

Or driving 7 hours (forgoing 7 hours of unpaid leisure time), paying $245 ($0.585 per mile x 420 miles) to save $300. If you value leisure time at $75/hour, so you’d be spending $770 to save $300.

Not unless I could make a day out of it somehow. Maybe scout out interesting places for lunch or something else to do while you're there.

Helpful hint, If you drive 100 mph you’ll cut your gas costs in half.

Agreed. The farthest I would drive to get that amount off of something would be to New Orleans, which is about 4-5 hour round trip for me, and I enjoy going to New Orleans so I'd just make a day out of it.

It's 3.5 hour drive, one way, to purchase something $300 cheaper than I can get it locally.

I kinda don't want the hassle.

I'd do it cuz i don't mind driving and my 4cyl Accord get's 38mpg at 70mph. And I'd find something along the way to make it worth it.
Houston, I'd go to the Container Store there and Billy's on the way there and back. nom nom.
Mobile, I'd go see the Battleship and Dauphin Island Ferry

So yea. I'd do it.

He said the item is too big and bulky to ship. If so, more than likely wont fit in a 4cyl honda accord. He's probably driving something in 21-28mpg range.
