I recently started building a pool and because of all the rain the gunite shell is just sitting. As of today there is around 20 inches of bright orange ground water in the pool. While the ground water intrusion is not alarming what is alarming is for the last few days I have come out and found multiple dead toads in the water. Any thoughts on what could be killing them? The water is bright orange which from my limited reading makes me believe it might be high in iron. Would this kill a toad?

toad's don't live in water. They likely jumped/fell in and drowned after exhaustion trying to get back out.

regardless, I have to go home at lunch and clean them out before the wife sees it and wants to drain out all the "contaminated" water....

This makes me feel so much better. My wife wanted me to go tell the framers to stop smoking "in our house" while they were building. I swear she's not as much of an idiot as this makes her sound.

I overheard my wife telling my son that thunder came from two clouds hitting each other and thought surely she was just making it up as a cute answer for a small child...nope

Sorry to hijack the OP.

I don't know the answer to your question but I will run down toads on my lawnmower. They burrow in the ground. They also eat spiders and slugs but I poison for those.

we had a pool when I was growing up, we often found dead frogs and toads floating in the skimmer. They hop into the water, then can't get out.

I like having a few in the yard for pest control but I've pulled 5 out the pool so far today. At this rate they are all going to drown by the weekend.

You need go out there and stand watch. Either stop them before they jump or be ready with a net.

Bring an umbrella and a cup of coffee, it's going to be a long night.

Ha in New Orleans Was forecast to get 10-15 inches and hasn't rained since yesterday morning. Love weather men, I wish I could get paid to be wrong most of the time.
