Is it true that cottons whole body floats on the surface when it swims, but other water snakes have just their head out?

I have always found it to be pretty accurate but I am no expert.

Cottons will float up high on the water. If they go under they come back up pretty quickly.

Water snakes will go down and stay down.

Good visual example of a cotton mouth swimming up high in the water.

Even when cruising on the surface, banded water snakes will swim with their head close to the surface...just kind of flat.

Every cottonmouth I've ever seen kept its head and usually (not always) a couple of inches of "neck" up out of the water.

I've seen water snakes do a pretty good impression of a cottonmouth when swimming; most of the body up with the head tilted up. I think the are more prone to do that when they are relaxed and nobody is around. If anyone is around they go under.

Had one cotton mouth swim between mine and a buddys kayaks on the ocmulgee about ten years back. He was on top. That was scary. Took a drunken pot shot at a huge mocassin on Seminole with a 9mm while gator hunting and he chased my boat. Also on top of the water.

Keep telling y’all they aren’t aggressive.
Even the Eastern diamondback we caught Friday didn’t strike once. Didn’t even rattle til about 20 minutes after we started messing with it.

Was that really him? The creek in that video looked like the Tchefuncte River and I think he lives across the river from our place.

I would think it would be the opposite, because they puff up with air to make themselves look big when they are threatened. But idk
