Any recommendations on a good hiking boot? I'd like something functional AND cute (can't help it -- i'm a girly girl -- don't judge me!)

I love Merrels. I wear more of a tennis shoe type. Stay away from gortex. Once it gets wet it stays wet.

Lighter the better.

I have Lowa's. I think I got them off Zapatos.

All leather. I like them. I have had them 7 years.

definitely Merrill. Got my GF some at Massey's a few months ago, and she really likes them.

Now if you are carrying a really heavy pack over rocky mountain terrain you may want something with a little more support. Merrils make a heavy duty boot also.

Look at Adidas AX1 Mid w/gore-tex. They make some decent hiking "boots." Even make them with pink.

We are going to need you to post a picture of your legs to get a better idea about what these boots are going to be attached to. This will help us give you the best recommendation.

Keeps water out while being able to vent.

I think it's better to have it than not to have it.

Aside from very cold conditions and snowy conditions, I wouldn't buy Goretex. It takes forever to dry and is far too hot. Mesh is breathable and dries quickly. When I had to wade through streams and hike in the rain I was glad to have something that let my feet breathe and could dry overnight.

I have a pair of Vasques, and I wouldn't recommend them for heavy duty use. They're already starting to tear up. I was disappointed and won't be buying Vasques again.

Re: Goretex. At some points your boots are going to get overtopped, it's unavoidable in the outdoors. And goretex boots take a lot longer to dry out than regular boots. A lot.

Whether to use it or not depends where you are hiking. Some type of water resistance is necessary for snow IMO.

I wear these for snowshoeing. Work fine and do a good job of keeping the feet dry. Merrell Thermo 6

Yup. I own one pair with gtx and it's only for Colorado.

Gaiters help avoid that problem but I still would only use goretex for snow.

She was talking about using them for hiking.

Regardless of what boot you wear, when you get water in them it gets complicated.

I don't get your reasoning here.

My Vasques have seen many a mile and I wore the sole down on 1 in 2 summers, and am on my second pair.
