If money isn’t the big factor, what shotgun would you have customized or buy for a youngster 8-10 years old? Mainly focusing on as little recoil as possible.

Beretta with the kick off system. It really reduces recoil as advertised. My 12 ga with 3.5” #2s kicks like a 20. I’ll bet you can hardly feel a 20.

I started my kid out at that age with a moss berg maverick 20ga. They have a youth model depending how big your kid is, but he was fine with the adult. He’s 18 now and still uses it for small game. It’s been a great gun.

Whatever you buy, purchase reduced recoil shotshells

I am thankful my first gun was a Remington 1100 in 410 at 9. Then got the 20 at 13 and the twelve a few years later. Now the only 1100 I am missing for the collection is the sweet 16.

Not just a gun but a collectible

I started of with the ole trusty single shot 410 then the pump 20 then a pump 12. Then an over under 12 then semi auto 12’s. I was already shoot a pump 20 at that age.

What kind of hunting is it going to be used for?

Franchi affinity compact in 20 gauge.

My son has one and it’s been flawless. A few other poster’s kid’s have the same.

Just bought my 12 yr old a Remy 1187 20GA. It has a 21 inch barrel with choke tubes. They quit making but you can find new on GB for around $500

first of all go to Academy or Bass PRO etc. with your son and let him hold the gun.

Last year I bought my 10yr a Remington youth wooden 870 express .410
it is a beautiful gun but my little guy just could not handle it because it was too heavy.
This year I bought him the Mossberg 510 Mini Super Bantam Pump-Action Shotgun. He loves this gun, he handles it well, the price point at $279.99 at Academy was fantastic and the safety is visible on top of the gun (most mossbergs are this way) which is great to a 1st time hunter.

get him good ear muffs and you will ready to go!

Mine hunts with that same Mossberg now, but that damn safety is really tough to turn off. I have trouble at times getting it to go to fire. I was thinking about getting him a different gun bc of this.

I noticed that as well before we even shot it. I oiled the hell out the safety and sat on the couch the for an hour at least moving it back and fourth. It is a little smoother now but not perfect by any means. With the safety on top at least I can just reach over and engage it for him if he is having trouble.

20 Ga Single shot hammer shotgun. Lightweight. Simple to operate. Reliable. And it will save dad a ton of $$$ on shells.

On a serious note, they will become better shooters with a single barrel gun. They will actually have to learn to aim accurately to shoot anything with it.

I have a 410 single shot it’s just a hammer action and don’t like the thought of him having to let the hammer down just yet.

we have a single shot break barrel .410 as well....he almost quit hunting before he even started by shooting this gun.
It probably kicks harder than my Beretta A400 lol

I’m almost certain you’re right about this. I shot that 410 in the back yard the other day and I surely didn’t remember that thing kicking as bad as it does.

A .410 would be an exercise in frustration.

It's absolutely the hardest gauge to shoot successfully.

My young boys at ages 6, 7, or 8 at the time started with either a single shot 410 or a 20ga pump. The 410 really seemed to have more of a punch than the 20 ga.

If you want them to eventually hit clays, then go for a 20 ga and a set of chokes. Have fun.
