It's trashy and degrading.

Agree.
Its a harsh industry run by ruthless people.
There are women who work independently, but not for long. If theyre successful, someone will take control of them. Its economics.

Otherwise decent people have resorted to cannibalism to save their families lives. Dire circumstances erase a lot of moral lines and the moral context of an individual's scenario should be considered, it one wants to make moral judgements.
