OLD, "illegal" Glove:

This story seems more about Politics than "Sports"...

*Excerpts*

(Outkick):

quote:

A strange scene unfolded Wednesday night when Chicago Cubs reliever Luke Little was met at the mound by an umpire and told to switch out his glove.

The reason? The black glove had an American flag on it.

(The official cited a series of Major League Baseball rules relating to a pitcher's glove, specifically a prohibition against white on the glove as it could theoretically distract a batter. )

Luke Little shared after the 4-3 win over the Houston Astros that he's worn the glove since Class A ball without a need to swap it out mid-game.

Little was astounded to learn that a bit of white from his glove could be seen as a competitive advantage, prompting questions about the league stepping in at the sight of someone wearing the American flag. Amid social derision in America, wearing the nation's flag has become increasingly taboo.

"The issue was the American flag was on his glove," Counsell shared, via the Associated Press. "Pitchers' gloves, they're pretty strict about not having white on the pitchers' gloves. Apparently, the flag had what could be a distraction to the hitter."

Realistically, Luke Little should be able to wear the American flag proudly. If anything, forcing Little to swap out his glove for one rarely used served as more of an issue since he had to play with what was a stiffer replacement.

Little commented on the scene after the game.

"I had to beat it a little bit, try and get it flexed out," he said. "Of all the things to do is breaking in a glove during a game."

The Cubs reliever shared that the original glove served no competitive advantage in his mind and that MLB reached out with a message instructing him not to use the glove going forward.

quote:

(NY Post):

Following the victory, Little posted “Proud to be an American … Go Cubs Go” on X, formerly known as Twitter, along with a flag emoji and a GIF of wrestler Hulk Hogan playing a guitar in front of an American flag.

Proud to be an American ???? Go Cubs Go pic.twitter.com/iKCPSvt8Gy

NY Post comments (at the link) are worth reading as usual fwiw.

Would need to know what is typically enforced to know if this is a real story or not.

At first glance, yeah I can see how a bright American flag on a black glove could be distracting, although I suspect it's less so IRL than in that photo. But no clue as to whether that's consistently applied.

It has nothing to do with politics or the flag. Pitchers cannot have distracting items for the batter. White in the flag can be confused for the ball. It's literally in black and white in the MLB rulebook. Not everything is anti-American.

Major League Baseball Rule 1.15

The "a" section of that rule states: "The pitcher's glove may not, exclusive of piping, be white, gray, nor, in the judgment of an umpire, distracting in any manner."

According to the rulebook, the crew chief can ask a pitcher to remove a glove by his own initiative, or via the recommendation of another umpire or a complaint by an opposing manager.

This is a non story. I'm a baseball guy. It is known from 10 year olds up that pitchers cannot have white on the glove or white sleeves.

I'm all for America but this is really a nothingburger.

So what about the big red Rawlings patch with Rawlings in white letters in the “approved” glove?

It looks like there is less white on that flag than if the piping were white.

100%
And the same crew crying about this would lose their mind if a pitcher sewed Black Lives Matter onto their glove

Hmmm, Mizuno makes a great glove. They existed during WWII but no American players used them. If a U.S. pitcher had used one I wonder if it would have caused problems.

Hopefully so, but they wouldn't be calling for it to be banned. They would just complain about what a stupid piece of shite would support blm.

it's not much of a story.

I've seen pitchers get called out for all kinds of shite.
length of laces on glove, sleeve color on throwing arm, etc.

the Astros probably alerted the ump to it before the game even started.
and has nothing to do with the flag itself.
Just Houston using any little thing they can find to try to get a pitcher out of his comfort zone.

Reason #1,873,469 not to watch or have anything to do with the treasonous Major League Baseball. Also, they HATE conservative white Christians… which is reason #1

Son had a Texas flag on his glove throughout college. Never got a ruling it was illegal. But it's up to the home plate umpire's judgement.

That's cool. Where did he play? Personally could care less what's on any player's glove

I'd imagine MLB rules don't apply to college
