Kroger Co. will eliminate paid emergency leave for unvaccinated employees who contract COVID-19 and require some unvaccinated employees on the company’s health care plan to pay a $50 monthly surcharge, the company said Tuesday.

The monthly surcharge will go into effect on Jan. 1 and will apply only to salaried, nonunion employees enrolled in the company’s health care plan. Kroger is incentivizing workers to get vaccinated with a $100 payment.

Various employers have been considering the health insurance surcharge as a way to encourage their workers to get vaccinated without mandating the shot. Businesses don’t want to fire employees who wouldn’t comply with a vaccine requirement amid a tight labor market.

That's one way to lose employees.

Eventually these businesses will lose critical employees because of this (already happened to a few businesses) and it will be too late for them.

They're shooting themselves in the foot based on shitty, unscientific advice.

HEB carries Boar's Head at the deli.

I'm good with that.

It’s BS that companies are doing this. Should be against the law to treat people differently . Wonder what craziness their insurance will pay for .

Are they still going to grant emergency leave for vaccinated employees when they get it? Because it is coming, actually, already here.

Sacked groceries there as a teen: Kroger always taught their management to be gripey, ultra-suspicious dicks. Now they have these commercials about their sensitivity to "social" issues. Ha Ha

I think that they also own Safeway and Albertsons. They are terrible stores. I'd never been in a Safeway until I moved out here but they are the worst grocery store chain I've ever been in. Narrow aisles, shitty selection, high prices, and grumpy employees(one literally asked me if I cared about the planet because I forgot to bring my own bags on the day that the laws on bags changed here)...everything you want in a trip to the store.

The company I work for (in the Chemical Industry) is docking non-kneelers $50 per paycheck for the first half of next year and $75 per paycheck for the second half. Over $1500 penalty for 2022. They also do not recognize immunity from previous infection, but will consider medical and religious exemptions.

Ain’t no way I’m kneeling, so let’s just leave it at that.

Yeah shaming a bunch of low wage employees is the way to go

As if they have anything to do with these types of decisions

Safeway is decent here in Washington. The problem you are experiencing is that you're in BEND, OREGON.

Hi. I’m Kroger and I’m actively encouraging sick employees to come to work.

Then a lot of those employees will just go to work anyway and not tell anybody they have covid as long as their symptoms stay mild enough to hide

The one closest to my house is just awful. I've only been in there about 4 times but have a miserable experience every time.

The last time I went in there just to dump a jar of change in their coin-star machine. A message comes on the screen telling me that it couldn't be processed, I tell the girl at the service desk and she gets an attitude and says that it hasn't worked for weeks. I tell her that I wouldn't have tried to use it if they had an out of order sign up or something.

Another time the checkout clerk jumps my arse for not having my items pushed to one side on the conveyor(never heard of this) and not telling them that I had a Safeway card until the end of the transaction(this is usually when you do it at most stores).

Do you have Winco in Washington? We just got one a year or so ago. They seem like a great chain. I really enjoy going there for groceries. The deli/bakery kinda sucks, though.

Some. They're not as prevalent as Safeway, Albertson's and Haagen.
