re: Navy secretary's USS Theodore Roosevelt speech triggers lawmakers' calls for his firing

Acting Secretary of Navy Thomas Modly:
quote:
"I have not listened to a recording of my remarks since speaking to the crew so I cannot verify if the transcript is accurate," Modly said. "The spoken words were from the heart, and meant for them. I stand by every word I said, even, regrettably any profanity that may have been used for emphasis. Anyone who has served on a Navy ship would understand. I ask, but don’t expect, that people read them in their entirety."
quote:
"Modly never was assigned as a line officer in the US Navy. A line officer is a Naval Office assigned to the US Fleet and serving aboard a ship. Modly graduated from Annapolis and taught Political Science at The Air Force Academy. He was never in command of any unit anywhere in The US Navy. So he himself as he stated "Anyone who has served on a Navy ship would understand". He hasn't served aboard a navy ship."

Yeah, saying that the commander not knowing that sending an email to "20 to 30" people might find its way to the public domain was "either naive or stupid"....
OK, and?
This isn't a military thing..even in the corporate world you are told to be careful what you say in an email as it could be easily forwarded.
Sending an email out to 20-30 people and not thinking it will end up in the public domain is both naive and stupid.
Loose lips sink ships. The military has been drilling OPSEC in our heads for decades. A captain of a goddamn aircraft carrier, being a commissioned officer in the United States Navy, should have known better. It should have never come to this where it had to be addressed.
But don't let that stop you from your sad little victory lap.

Since when does Congress have any say in military functions other than carrying out orders?

quote:but he has. He served aboard the USS Nassau, which was an amphibious assault ship. Still doesn’t make his speech any less weird though.
He hasn't served aboard a navy ship."

Well Halsey had quite a few frick ups on his record. Battle off Samar with TF34, and him leading the 3rd fleet into a typhoon come to mind.

Speech was excellent. Anyone that disagrees is a libtard of the highest order.

It looks like secnav knows his speech wasn’t excellent- he is walking it back
On Monday night, after facing significant criticism from lawmakers, retired military leaders and the rank and file, Modly issued an apology for the comments he made to the crew of the Theodore Roosevelt. “Let me be clear, I do not think Captain Brett Crozier is naïve nor stupid,” Modly said in a written statement. “Captain Crozier is smart and passionate. I believe, precisely because he is not naïve and stupid, that he sent his alarming email with the intention of getting it into the public domain in an effort to draw public attention to the situation on his ship. I apologize for any confusion this choice of words may have caused.”

Absolutely. Try coming on my ship, getting on the 1MC and trashing the CO that just fell on his sword because he cared more about his sailors than his career/retirement. frick the SECNAV.
Ask the crew of the TR how they feel about it.
