No matter how you fall on the "moral" argument of reparations, I simply can't see any way to get past the 5th amendment due process issues. How would you ever come up with a program that would be anything other than the color of your skin, or possibly genetics? Even then, this is not a binary (literally black and white) issue.

Even if you could define who is "black" and who is "white" (and limit the mechanism to these two groups), how do you reconcile that some blacks owned slaves, most whites did not, and many whites and blacks here have no ancestry in that time/place?

There is simply no way you could formulate something that would pass the due process test. That being the case, why waste all this time on a dead end?

I'd like a moderator to ask a single question about this, just to call out the pandering.

This was never a well thought out policy position when Kamala Harris floated it (causing all the other leftist idiots to cling to it).

Reparations are the left's "lock her up" campaign promise

Legally you could frame it as anyone who is a descendant if someone was legallly held in slavery in the US

But they were originally enslaved by tribes on the ivory coast, wouldnt that mean those countries are responsible?

What about people who call themselves "black" today but are actually majority white?

I mean, if you have 3 white grandparents and one black one, you almost certainly run around calling yourself black.

But, the reality is, you're mostly white and your hue is simply a product of genetics

LOL

Even the left isn't for only that.

It would eliminate a ENORMOUS swath of black voters and let's be blunt here. This is first and foremost, a vote buying scheme

I would still wager the vast majority of Black Americans are descendants from US slaves.

France, Spain, and Great Britain also had slaves in what is now the U.S. Should we have them pitch in.

Reperations is a nice thought

The logistics kinda shuts it down

Who gets paid?
Who pays it?

How does it make sense for someone like my father who is 100% defended from post civil war immigrants to pay for this?

Obviously black Americans who are descended from post civil war immigrants shouldn’t benefit from this.

What % black do you have to be?

Do we pro rate it?

There is no real framework that would be fair.

Irrelevant to my point. A very large number, aren't.

And, moreover, a large number who were, have no way of proving it.

If gender is a “social construct” as the left demands we accept, so is race.

I identify as a descendant of slaves and can prove I am black from the waist down.

Occupation is a “social construct” as well.

So you will call me Doctor.

Where’s my check?

Only 2% of americans owned slaves at the height of slavery.

It was 8% for free blacks.

Here is what I’d like to know when it comes to reparations. How will they determine who gets paid?

Will they have to prove to be the direct descendent of slaves?

What if someone has one ancestor who was a slave but another ancestor who was a slave owner?

What if they’re fully black but their ancestors were free blacks?

What if they’re fully black and their ancestors were black slave owners?

If you’re white and your ancestors arrived in the US after slavery ended does that mean your tax dollars won’t go to pay reparations?

Or if you’re black and your ancestors arrived in the US after slavery ended does that mean you don’t get reparations?

How will this work?

In 2013, about 9% of blacks who were in America were foreign born. Contemplate that. Almost 1 in 10 blacks in America in 2013 were FOREIGN BORN!

Quite obviously, their children also won't be "descendants of slavery".

So, right off the bat, that almost certainly brings you over 10%. And, that's probably being conservative given that in the year 2000, 6.7% were foreign born and, ya gotta assume in the intervening 13 years, they had some babies.

In NYC, 28% of blacks were foreign born in 2013! In Miami, 34%.

It would be a shite show extraordinaire if they tried to restrict reparations to only those who were descended from slaves.

Based on the above numbers, it's pretty evident that a VERY significant number of blacks have no connection whatsoever.
