Tales & Spirits: probably my favorite cocktail bar in town.

Also mine

(My other, WhiskyCafe near Leidseplein, looks to be closed for foundation work until February...I was worried it was closed for good)

In my years here never been, but have heard it often mentioned. For Rijsttafel I usually go to the renowned Blauw in Oud-Zuid or otherwise my spot in de buurt - Café Kadijk

Oh those are better choices for quality of food, but there is something special about Indrapura. It’s definitely touristy, and the food isn’t as good as it is in those other places that you mentioned, but it’s still not bad.

One year.

For work.

2009-10.

Lived about 2 blocks from Kinkerstraat/Bilderdijkstraat in the Oude West.

Nice ‘09-‘10 was probably an interesting balance of the edgy old school AMS against the onslaught of gentrification that started around that time. Got here in 2014 myself…

Oud-West is fun, we almost bought our place there (as well as De Pijp) but ultimately settled on (broader) Plantagebuurt on the eastern side of the “Centrum”

Nice best of both worlds, technically in the city-center, and can walk to the central station in 15 minutes, while living in a picturesque, calm and untouristed residential part of town with a real neighborhood feel.

But alas still more of my favorite haunts (food and drink) are in Oud-West…

I spent a lot of weekends traveling after a month or two in Amsterdam.

Started with close places like Rotterdam, Antwerp Cologne, and Brussels.

Then took longer trips to Paris, Frankfurt, Berlin, Munich, and Vienna.

Quick tram ride to Centraalstation then off to wherever.

It was fun exploring Europe whenever I felt like it. And cheap.

Never flew. Always the train. So easy and so much to see.

We are doing the Rhine Viking cruise for about a week starting in Amsterdam
Thanks for the suggestions
Spent a few days in Amsterdam before getting on long boat and a few days in Lucerne and at the end of the trip.
The bike ride thru Amsterdam was cool, you just gotta keep your head on a swivel

Selected Photos!

Just got here! Cold as shite and very rainy. Knew that coming in but even still.

Took a canal tour, Still a great time. Had a great wine, beer and cheese board for us.

Some protests. This one was an Israeli one near the town municipal center. First boat protest on the canals our guide had ever seen.

Toured the Rijksmuseum.

Thanks again all for the input. Has been very helpful!! Will do a trip report overall when we get back!

And that’s why I escaped to Portugal for the weekend, currently winding through the fog and intermittent sunshine of the Douro Valley, 60°

Douro was beautiful, we just did a day excursion by bus with one of the big tour companies.

The sun didn’t really come out as forecasted but the fog/mist shrouding the terraced hills did give a nice aesthetic.

En route back to Porto now.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying “Mokum” - which places have you checked out so far for food and drink, any of my recs?

We went on that cruise in the opposite direction...Basal to Amsterdam and stayed the extension in Amsterdam. Lot's of good eats. Our highlights were the Weed/Hemp museum, Anne Frank house, canal boat tour, VanGogh exhibit/museum, trying weed snacks, coffee shop and just walking around. Many of the building are sinking and a lot have been fortified. Lots of cool buildings and house boats. Watch out for bikes...more bikes than people and many riders will run into you or happily deposit you into a canal. I highly recommend the walking tour offered by Viking at the beginning of your visit and trying to getvenue tickets ahead of time. There are lots of other things to do, but just have fun.

Will work on my trip report sometime within the next week or so. Just got back. But regarding Amsterdam. This video captures exactly what the red light district looks like.
