Wife (no pics) and I will be in the Detroit area in August, and have a couple of days to burn. Looking for a small cool-type town within a 3 hour drive to hang out in. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Tangential, but seek out some of that Lebanese/middle eastern food. Some of the best in the US. Dearborn especially. Large Muslim population, and they can throw down food wise.

A little out of your range, but Charlevoix and Boyne City are nice.

This is the best answer you're going to get: Put-In-Bay, Ohio.

Traverse City, MI area is nice but out of your travel range. And ffs, don't go to Dearborn.

If you're willing to extend the drive to around 4 hours, there's much better options... Traverse City, Torch Lake, Sleeping Bear Dunes. My wife (no pics) and I live in the Detroit metro area and love that area. Depending where in Detroit you are, it's roughly 4 hours (takes us under 3.5 from Royal Oak to Traverse City).

There's some good areas on the west side of the state that take 3 hours to get to. I have friends that spend a lot of time in Muskegon, South Haven, and New Buffalo. I haven't been, but they are Michiganders and love it.

Lexington is another small coastal town less than 2 hours from Detroit that I get recommendations for all the time. I feel like you can't really go wrong with most towns on either coast as you move north from Detroit.

Someone mentioned Put-in-Bay in Ohio... if you're looking to do some heavy drinking, that could be an option. I've only been for a couple group outings where that was the goal. I'm sure it will be very busy at any point in August, but then again so will most nice places along the Great Lakes.

Like others said Traverse City area is really nice. Also consider the other side of the state; Tawas to Alpena is all nice. SMALL towns though. Not as touristy as the Traverse city area. Alpena has a lot of shipwreck diving or a glass bottom boat tour. Austin Brothers Brewery has good food and beer as well. The quarry turned park north of Alpena has really good fossil hunting.

This is probably the best answer but still further than 3 hours.

Depending on what you're looking for you might check out Higgins Lake and Houghton Lake near Roscommon. Not a resort town, but nice places to get a lakehouse for a few days.

Or Port Austin for some kayaking

Some really good places mentioned.

Holland is really cool and right at 3 hours. You can cut through Grand Rapids on the way as well.

Holland has a very cool downtown with New Holland Brewing a handful of casual restaurants and some decent shopping. We stayed at the Courtyard last summer and it’s right on the main drag downtown.

Holland, Grand Haven, Saugatuck might be the best answer yet. Forgot that is only a 3 hour drive.

Looking into South Haven. Would you recommend staying downtown? We are interested in restaurants, breweries, wineries, etc.

If you can, yes. That's walking distance to both beaches and where most of the shops are.

We stayed in Harbor Club bc we had 10 people, easy drive to downtown and parking was easy. Had a pool. We enjoyed Three Hands brewing.

This was my first time going, I would go back, but 3 days/nights is plenty of time.

Family members have been in Traverse City the past few days. Enjoyed it. Headed to Charlevoix and Mackinaw Island next. They are enjoying the trip.

There are a ton of small towns along Lake Michigan. St Joe, New Buffalo, Ludington, Muskegon, etc.

That area of the country has a nostalgic feel to them. Drive-in restaurants, soft serve ice cream shops, candy stores, seasonal amusement parks, old style motor inns, etc.

Traverse City. Just drive a little more. The wineries. The dunes. The lake. Go to Leland and get a "Chubby Mary"! Got it all.

My favorite place in the US.

Another option on the lake a little further south would be Frankfort. Nice little town.

We stayed at the Wayfarer Lodgings. Kind of a piece of Americana. Cute little small cabins. Really liked it.
