Which character do you enjoy best?

I’ve never seen cuckoos nest, but I didn’t really like Luke. In fact, that whole movie kind of stinks.

Both got exactly what they deserved
Luke is lovable in a bad dog kind of way.
Randle Patrick McMurphy is an a-hole shithead. He’s also a phony.
Both are ‘leaders’, but they hate the idea of anyone following them.
Two great characters from two amazing films.

I am helping add to the cause. The answer to OP's question is Luke though.

Two of my absolute favorite characters in film. Impossible to pick one. I even have a bottle opener necklace like the one Luke wore.

IMO: Both were believable bc some ppl will fight a bad fight for stupid reasons.

Carl, the floor walker at the prison camp explained all the infractions that got a man to spend the night in the box. Great scene.
Oh, and "Cool Hand Luke" for me. Another movie of Paul Newman's that came out the same year is one of my favorites.
"Hombre" is a great movie with a very solid cast to go with it.

Just watched CHL for the umpteenth time on a flight recently and it’s so damn good. Could barely control my laughter during the “no man can eat 50 eggs” scene with Dragline rubbing Luke’s belly and forcing eggs down his gullet. That boy Luke was truly a natural born world shaker.

Best Supporting Actor-1967 Cool Hand Luke

Luke certainly didn’t deserve to be effectively tortured and ultimately murdered. He was jailed for “cutting the heads off parking meters”. He wasn’t a bad person, he’d just had a rough life. He had done well in the war. He asked God why he couldn’t catch a break.
RP on the other hand was guilty of battery and statutory rape. He faked being mentally ill to get out of prison. While he had been heroic in the war, and certainly his standing up to Ratchet was a good thing, he probably was more of a “bad person”. Still he didn’t deserve to be lobotomized.

Luke was more like the abused/neglected dog, than actually “bad”. You’re more on target with RP.

I’d say that both were non-conformist. RP had a huge ego and absolutely did like the idea of others following him. Luke was the opposite and the reluctant leader.

Absolutely

Did you really take from both of those movies that they were “fighting a bad fight for stupid reasons”?
Both Luke and RP are generally considered to have some Christ-like characters. It’s a lot more obvious that’s what the filmmakers were going for with Cool Hand Luke from many of the scenes, but ultimately the story of McMurphy was that he sacrificed himself to get rid of the evil Ratchet.
Both were fighting “good fights” that were unintentional, and started for other reasons.

Luke was a more likable character. McMurphy was a legit criminal minded sociopath who deserved the lobotomy they gave him.
And to took it a step further, Nurse Ratched got a bad wrap. Until they introduced a criminal into her milieu, she kept things calm and therapeutic, which in a long term psych facility is all you can really ask for.
