Multiple sources are reporting that Brian Kelly is expected to hire former LSU star defensive tackle Kyle Williams as the Tigers' new defensive line coach.

Williams was most recently serving as the defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Ruston High School, where he began his coaching career in 2020. He will replace Bo Davis, who recently took a job with the New Orleans Saints.

Williams played at LSU from 2002 to 2005, appearing in 46 games with 33 starts, and was the starting defensive tackle on the 2003 National Championship team.

The Ruston native was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 5th round of the 2006 NFL Draft and played with the franchise from 2006 to 2018. He was a Second-team All-Pro in 2010 and a six-time Pro Bowler.

Let’s see. Remember LSU out recruited everyone for Underhill & Jahkeem Stewart but in the end it was money that swayed them. So being a top recruiter has gone the way of the DoDo bird. So Williams can coach them up quickly. So F being a top recruiter

Now that is an interesting hire. No coaching career to this point, but that's a big name and he may be a natural.

It appears that I am in the minority here, but this feels like another lazy hire. Kyle is a true Tiger and an excellent human being. That being said, he's an unproven recruiter and untested coach. I hope he proves me wrong

He’s a leader of men as they say. I’ve seen him in action. And his heart and passion are huge. His guys will run through a brick wall for him. We will miss him in Ruston

This is a great hire for a position coach. Alumni and Pro Bowler who played 13 years in NFL. You know he knows technique. Instant credibility and still young enough to relate to a 20 year old. Great hire.

Saban hired a high school coach as director of player personnel, then he promoted him as the defensive backs coach. That coach was Jeremy Pruitt.

I just looked him up and the news that came up was that the Bills hired him a few weeks ago to be their DT coach? Did we snipe him?

A guy who earned $58,228,000 playing DLine in the NFL, volunteers to coach his old Louisiana high school football team, helped LSU win a National Championship, should be coaching LSU defensive line.

No brainer. For 12 years he was one of the best DL players in the world. If he did it he can teach it. He knows what a DLine DAWG is. He is one.
user avatar
Smart move, I think. Needed to put more of an emphasis on someone that can teach and develop the skills well rather than being a high profile recruiter (thanks to the transfer portal). Who better to do that than someone who did it at the highest level.

All I know is when Marcus Spears was getting bouquets, all he did was deflect and talk about how Kyle Williams “can play this game.”

Considering the timing and what we’ve seen Kyle do on and off the field, this is a hire I’m good with until proven otherwise.

I always loved me some Kyle at DT, but as an SEC DT Coach? I have no doubt he will be able to teach this kids how to play the position. But the two most important things, I don't know. First, can he recruit at the SEC level, he's never done it before, can he convince these 2026 DT studs to commit to LSU? And second, can Kyle convince the studs we have in-house to stay and prevent the mass exodus that's being predicted? Nobody knows how Big Kyle is going to do especially making these kids believe and trust in him, remember he's replacing an f'ing legend. And there is that wise ole saying, "It's best to replace the guy who replaced a legend than being the guy who replaced a legend. GOOD LUCK KYLE AND CONGRATS!!!!!

His career earnings and longevity in the NFL should be enough to convince anyone.

How much convincing does a kid in the NIL era need from a guy that was an All Pro and 6 time pro bowler, who won a national championship
and was an All American, in addition to making 70 mill during his 13 year NFL career?

I agree but let’s recall how Kevin Mawae was often thought unfit as oline coach……I’d say on par with Kyle’s NFL success, no?
