Amazon Kindle policy change 2/26

If you haven't heard, Amazon on 2/26 will no longer let you download your ebooks to devices besides Kindles.
Also I read that with newer Kindles, you can't use Calibre to pull books off of it anymore (maybe it's because the files are encrypted). Though I'm sure people will eventually find a way.
Just went through my ~250 Kindle books on Amazon and downloaded them to my NAS as a backup.
I should have done this earlier anyway; if Amazon ever terminated my account I'd have lost access to my books.

Anyone have any experience with Kobo readers? I love my Kindle Paperwhite, but I have thousands of non-Amazon books. If Calibre can't be my 1-stop solution, there's no reason not to bifurcate the collection.

this is why i buy a hard copy of a book after i finish it on kindle, and i why i prefer physical media. i view kindle as a convenience for reading when i dont have a physical book with me. i hate that they can just arbitrarily change or remove access to something that has been purchased. it's infuriating.

I just pirate what I can't find on Libby or don't feel like waiting for. I don't feel too bad about it anymore. If I really enjoy the book, I'll buy it for my bookshelf.

So you can't download an Amazon ebook to anything but a Kindle? Not a problem for me; i just download library books to my kindle. I have the idea of giving Jeff Bezos any more money than I have too.

Being an old fart, I prefer reading physical copies of newspapers, magazines and books. It’s not always handy or convenient, but I prefer the experience.

The last hard copy of a book i opened had incredibly small print. Or maybe it's just my eyes getting older.

I have a hard drive somewhere with 10,000+ books, but they are all before 2010
I should find that
I should find that

How does this work on iPhone/Pad with the Kindle app?

The last time I moved, it involved a couple hundred books (mainly hardbacks) which was a pain in the arse to deal with. I decided then that going forward I wouldn't buy physical books on a normal basis. Since then I've only bought a couple physical books. These were special edition leatherbound books of my favorites where I didn't have a hardback already.
Over the years, I now prefer reading on a Kindle especially since I read mainly when I'm in bed before going to sleep.
If I ever lose access to an ebook I've previously bought; I have no issues with finding a free copy on the interwebs.

quote:I have a Kobo Sage and love it. Has all the features, long battery life, etc. It doesn't show colors but other Kobo ereaders do. Although you can convert from Kindle to one of the Kobo-friendly formats now, that seems to be changing. But I have never needed to purchase an ebook from Amazon, if Kobo doesn't have it a quick search will find someone that does.

There is one caviat to using pirated / Calibre ebooks with a Kobo - after you get updates through your WiFi link every 3-4 months, you will get an error message each time you try to open one of these non-Kobo sourced ebooks. Refers to incompatibility with Adobe Digital Edition. If this happens, just log off, shut down and sign in again. Your ebooks should reappear.
