Murakami’s Hear the wind sing/Pinball, 1973 reminds me of Women to a degree.

John Fante was Bukowski's favorite author ( Fante) and his novel Ask The Dust is first rate despite the girlfriend angle being a little unrealistic. I would recommend you read that. Its a masterpiece of American literature.
