Just saw the first book is a Kindle Unlimited right now and I do enjoy fantasy books. Thoughts on this one? Don't really want to jump into the series if it's just kind of meh.

ETA: Fantasy recommendations then?

It’s not meh. But it isn’t the greatest series I’ve ever read either.

I guess it depends on how far down in the dregs you are for reading material. I wouldn’t reread the series. But if I was waiting for books to be published, read them.

There are a couple of aha! Moments in the books. And I’ve certainly read worse. And it does have clever moments and nobody is bullet proof in the series. Not quite Game of Thrones blood letting of main characters, but not an immortal cast either.

I’d give it 6.5/10

I thought Fourth Wing was better than Iron Flame. The second book dragged on a bit. My impression of it is a more adult Harry Potter. I'll read them as they come out unless it starts to tank, but I'm not going to rush to get them on release day.

It's the best of the "romantasy" books that are popular right now, but it's just good on its own.

It's a pretty good bridge book for people who like romance, but haven't done much fantasy.

It was pretty entertaining. My wife was all in on it and wanted me to read it. There are a lot of aggravating things about it but the whole premise is pretty cool.

The first one setups a pretty cool world but the second one is a bloated mess

That was my concern.

So, anyone have any good fantasy recs similar to that of ASOIAF that isn’t Sanderson (I like Sanderson, just looking for beyond him)?

This. My wife convinced me to read it. I'm not typically into fantasy but found myself enjoying Fourth Wing. Although I couldn't get into the second book and have no interest in reading the next one that comes out

If nothing else I'll read it so I can make fun of it.
