Trying to read a classic here and there this year. This was my first time reading this one and it was outstanding. Wasn't anywhere close to how Hollywood portrays the story. She has a way of making the reader feel the anguish. Really enjoyed.

I recently read this one, too. It was alright, but definitely different than how the story is usually portrayed in film, as you say.
It takes me a while to get a good reading flow going with old styles of writing, for some reason. Might have contributed to my feelings of it being simply “okay.”

It is one of my favorites. A lot more layers to this than a simple "horror" story.
Hollywood movies rarely get the point nor fully express the meaning of great literature.

Well, someone does.

It's really an interesting piece of work when you start pulling the layers back and also consider the situation in which she was writing. She had lost a child shortly after birth at this point and you can definitely see some of Lord Byron in Victor's portrayal.
The New Yorker had a good article a few years back discussing some of the influences on the work from Shelleys own life.

Did a re-read on it a few months ago as well. Didn't like it quite as much as I remembered but still a classic and worth reading. For some reason, the sympathy for Dr. Frankenstein or the creature just wasn't there as much this go around.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a bigger fan of classic horror than I, but James Whale made a better Frankenstein than Shelley did.

The name escapes me but there's a really good movie with a dubious account of the night Frankenstein was written featuring Gabriel Byrne as Lord Byron. A Stormy Night, maybe? Definitely worth a watch.
Nope, Gothic.
