I was late to the game and haven't been waiting as long as some fans for the next edition to Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards series, but after reading Lies, I went through the next two very quickly

There is finally an update (2 months ago) and the Thorn of Emberlain may finally be close. Or at least closer than Winds of Winter. Just speculation on my part that finishing the novellas as a lead up to book 4 might mean book 4 is coming late 2025 or early 2026... Still before Winds of Winter

Reading the novellas is not required for anything plot related with Thorn

Update

3 new novellas are coming linked together called the Road to Emberlain. 40k words each about the time between Republic and Thorn

Or for info directly from Scott Lynch instead of an article
His Blog

quote:

. The Road to Emberlain is a linked sequence of three novellas bridging the events of The Republic of Thieves and The Thorn of Emberlain, detailing the year Locke and Jean spend crossing the continent and developing the scheme that will bring them to Emberlain in its time of war. Absolutely nothing in these novellas will be essential to readers of The Thorn of Emberlain; no critical plot information will be withheld. However, I hope readers will find these shorter works a pleasant expansion and a deeper exploration of the background story.

And also there is a short story (part 1) that released on some magazine a few weeks ago

quote:

I'm delighted to report that "Locke Lamora and the Bottled Serpent" will be a two-part extravaganza bridging the October 2024 and January 2025 issues of GDM.

Grimdark magazine issue #40 that is on Amazon or Kindle unlimited for free. I'll check it out soon

The only person on the planet more full of crap and lazier than GRRM. No way I'd read anymore of his stuff or give him any more money. It's supposed to be 7 books. It 10000000000% will never get finished. You should only read it if you have no cares that you're reading a story that will never come close to being finished. It's sad because it's a great story.

That would be Patrick Rothfuss, a true POS that hates his fans and is lazy as frick.

I don't believe anything from Lynch or Rothfuss until its published

I forget about him. I never even started that one because of how bad people talked about him and not finishing. Been burned by fantasy writers too many times now to start on a series of a writer that can't put out books in a timely manner.

You would think he's be able to finish since it's only one book left right? Lynch isn't even close to being done, he's got four more.

Lynch is generally pretty good with fans he's just mental issues.

Rothfuss is a fricking dick.

Yeah, I'm still going to enjoy the series and the new additions he's written.

At least with Gentlemen Bastards, you can read the books and not be left hanging.

It's not a Jon Snow being stabbed and then end book

This. I at least have some marginal sympathy for Lynch due to his mental struggles, even though I doubt he ever finishes.

Rothfuss will never see another penny of my money (I thought the second book was garbage anyway).

A problem a lot of these writers have, probably GRRM and Lynch more so than Rothfuss based on everyone's view of him, is the next (very) long awaited book will probably get labeled as garbage by today's crap fandom anyway.

A lot of the nerds have built up in their minds what the next book is supposed to have or do and when it comes out and doesn't meet their 15+ years of expectations, it's shite. I see it with a lot of stuff

Like the DND movie was good. I really liked it, but nerds built it up so much and it didn't match their delusions so you were an idiot if you didn't agree the movie was shite

You can book it. IF WoW or Doors ever get published, it'll be the "worst book of the entire series" and "what has GRRM/PR been doing for 15 years" even if it is just decent, it'll be considered shite

At this point, I'm gonna need cliffnotes on the previous books to remember anything about what's happening.

Normally I'd re-read the books, and may do it if they ever get released

But YouTube may be my go-to to be honest

Here is one video summarizing A Game of Thrones

I wish they did the rest of the books too. Actually a legit good summary

Agree that it will never be completed and I probably won’t read any more bless it does get finished.

But….

Lies was a fantastic story that works really well as a stand alone novel and I’d recommend to anyone regardless of if the series is ever completed.

The first 2 that’s true. But Republic of Thieves finished with a pretty damn big WTF moment/cliffhanger.

The original release date for this book was September 2016. We're past 8 years since this book was supposed to have been released.

I read Lies back before there was even a book board on TD. We used to talk about books on the Movie/TV board. It was recommended to me there, and I absolutely loved it. I loved the following two books also.

But how long are fans supposed to wait?

Its been so long since the original release date that I have forgotten to care about this book.

Maybe his editors should sit him down and say "Scott, instead of bitching about Trump all day on twitter, how about writing a few pages of the novel that's 8 years late?"

I can guarantee you, that if Trump wins, Lynch is going to go into a Trump derangement spiral, and we will never see that book.

I brought actual news and movement about the next book and you brought poli board crap in.

Congrats on being an early fan, but new stuff, relating to the next book, is being released and to me that is progress and hopefully, a light at the end of the tunnel

It's not a GRRM update of "I wrote a chapter then took a month break but finally back at it", it's "I wrote 3 novellas totalling 120k words that span the year between books and they are done, just waiting on the publisher to release", fwiw, that's is a novel length combined

Wasn't boasting. Just letting you know that I, and many others here, have seen all of this before from Lynch.

He's written countless novellas and short stories and reviews and blog posts and twitter messages and tumblr posts. He's travelled the world to attend multiple fan events, comic cons, Sci Fi cons and the like. And none of them have lead to the book being released.

As far as the "poliboard crap" is concerned, I only bring it up because the "poliboard crap" is one of the main reasons why the book was delayed in the first place. Lynch has stated this himself.

I'm glad that you're excited - I'd like to be excited by this news myself - and I don't mean to dampen your spirits. But we've seen this similar song and dance from Lynch multiple times before.

GRRM has written plenty of short stories and novellas set in the ASoIaF universe over the years. Plenty. None of them have lead to him releasing the novel any sooner.

ETA:

From Lynch's own press release on the novellas:

quote:

Q. Weren't novellas announced using some of these titles years ago?

A. Yes. Originally, many years ago, The Mad Baron's Mechanical Attic was conceived as a prequel to The Lies of Locke Lamora detailing how the Gentlemen Bastards took possession of the brandy they used for their con game. I decided to abandon that idea

So we've been through this before. "I've made progress! Something new in the Gentlemen Bastards universe is coming out! Novellas! Get excited!"

Then nothing. No updates for years.

ETA 2:

quote:

Q. When and where will The Road to Emberlain novellas be available?

A. This is a project forthcoming from Subterranean Press.

Forthcoming. No release date. One wonders if the novellas are even written yet.

You missed a couple sentences later

quote:

All details and release timestables will ultimately be up to them; expect the next announcement about these books to come from them.

That means the novellas are done and waiting on the publisher. So it is actual news and not a false promise. Plus the short story just released. All his other works are related as far as I can see

And what novellas and short stories are directly in line with the current series? This is specifically between Republic and Thorn, but also standalone like the previous 3 and actually about Locke and Jean.

GRRM just does short stories, novellas or books that don't fall in line with the current series. He did more writing for the early Targaryens than finishing Winds of Winter

It's not the same

His point is valid. It’s not taking political sides to point out that Lynch had a very difficult time accepting that Trump was president and it really did a number on his already fragile mental health. Lynch has basically said as much.

You can read the first 2 books.

They are basically stand alone stories, especially the first one. And it’s probably one of the best single fantasy books around.
