This is one of the LA specialties I miss dearly. Anyone got any good recommendations?

I've been here 19 years and still don't have a good answer for you.

HEB sells central markets olive salad. Buying that and making my own has been the best option, though I'm sure that's not the answer you're looking for.

Come visit LA. Get one here.

Otherwise, I would say your best bet is to buy all the ingredients and make it yourself.

Meats and cheese you can get anywhere. Olive salad you can get on amazon in a jar.

Bread is going to be the thing. Look for a harder seeded roll (it may be easier to do smaller mini muffs than a full size one). Maybe try an Italian bakery? Failing that, maybe a ciabatta bread?

It's going to be a challenge.

I get home to Nola area frequent enough that I've never tried to get a muff in Houston.

Brett's BBQ in Katy does muffuletta specials occassionaly. They'res non-traditional, but got rave reviews and looked great.

If nothing else, looks like they got the bread reasonably right.

ciabatta bread?

I’ve made them with focaccia bread before and we loved it.

I get my muffuletta fix at Paulie’s Poboys. Their bread is correct on the “whole sandwich” but they also make a smaller version on a poboy bun. They spread a little mayonnaise on one side and homemade olive salad on the other. I normally get my fix at the store in front of Royal Oaks CC but their original location is in Southside Place. Also, their Original and Supreme poboys are much better than what Antone’s has devolved into.

Tony’s Italian Deli up in Montgomery has long been talked about as having an excellent muffuletta, though I’ve not made the trek to judge for myself. They recently opened a location on Fry Road in Katy, making a taste test more plausible. A trip to Galveston is never complete without a great muffaletta from Maceo’s Spice Shop.

Try Paulie's on Saturday...the Italian place on Westheimer...not Paulie's Poboys.

I know this may draw some downvotes, but Jason's Deli has pretty good muffulettas. Its not Central Grocery, but will do if you are craving cold cuts and olive mix.

I know I will get downvoted for this but honestly the best I've been able to find is Jason's deli. They use real Leidenheimers muff bread and their olive mix is decent.

ETA: Obviously I did not read to the bottom of the thread before posting

I'm no muffaletta expert so I don't know if its worth a drive, but if you ever find yourself in the Stafford/Sugarland area I love the one at Fresh & Savory.

Ate their all the time while building a warehouse in the area.

I’m surprised and appalled at how many places put mustard on them.
