ETA: These aren't necessarily in order of preference. But "Perfume" and "Big Night" are probably my favorites on the list.

"The Music of Chance" - James Spader/Mandy Patankin get into some high stakes gambling situations.

"Mississippi Grind" - Ryan Reynolds/Ben Mendelsohn get into some high stakes gambling situations.

"Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" - I've seen the previous two films brought up from time to time. This one, I don't ever recall seeing mentioned on this site. It's SO fricking good. From the director of "Run Lola Run". It's about a fella in circa late 1700's France that has a superhuman sense of smell, trying to capture some difficult-to-capture smells. It's pretty dark, beautifully shot/paced. One of the final scenes is pretty "epic".

Some others:
-The Endless (Sci-fi mindfrick)
-The Kid Detective (dark humor modern noir mystery)
-Brick (thought of it as soon as I typed "Kid Detective")
-Priceless (French movie, so maybe it shouldn't count)
-Big Night (you'll be hungry afterwards)
-Zero Effect (Bill Pullman + Ben Stiller comedy/mystery)
-Coherence (Sci-fi mindfrick)

The Gods Must Be Crazy from 1980

Xi and his San tribe[a] live happily in the Kalahari Desert, away from industrial civilization. One day, a glass Coca-Cola bottle is thrown out of an airplane by a pilot and falls to the ground unbroken. Initially, Xi's people assume the bottle to be a gift from their gods, just as they believe plants and animals are, and find many uses for it. Unlike other gifts, however, there is only one glass bottle, which causes unforeseen conflict within the tribe. As a result, Xi, wearing only a loincloth, decides to make a pilgrimage to the edge of the world and dispose of the divisive object.

Sleepers

hardly ever hear anyone talk about this one, and never see it playing on tv.

DeNiro, Hoffman, Pitt, Bacon, J. Patrick. A coming of age story with a heavy dose of revenge.

Really enjoyed this movie, but I’m not sure why I like it so much. It’s definitely underrated.

Agree. It’s gotta be at the top or near it in the list of movies we love and don’t know why.

There’s Moneyball, Social Network and Draft Day as well for some fairly recent ones.

Peacock (2010). Cillian Murphy is in it and it's weird as frick but he's just great.

I don't know how highly The Grand Budapest Hotel is rated but to me it's one of the best movies ever

And Rip Torn. Streep is a nothing in the film.

Total classic.

But you really have to like Albert Brooks style and personna.

Like Woody Allen movies in which he stars...if you hate Woody Allen's shtick, his comedy, you'll hate the movie.

Brooks has that same incessant "complaining comedy" but he's not as annoying as Allen.

Several of my picks have been said.

My favorite animated movie that I feel has the best life lesson/message is

No matter what, keep moving forward. When you fail, keep moving forward. I think more people need to follow that lesson.

My two big other picks that I haven't seen in the thread are:

Jonah Hex.

That movie was absolutely blasted critically. I thought it was enjoyable as "comic book" movies go.

Josh Brolan does a good job.

It's not a masterpiece but far better than given credit for.

-Dustin Hoffman , Geena Davis, Andy Garcia, Chevy Chase
Dustin is a lowlife who saves people from an airplane crash and Andy Garcia is homeless man who gets credit for rescue. Very funny and Hoffman is terrific as always.

Another very good Hoffman performance.

Two Friedkin films:

1) Sorcerer - original theater run only lasted for a few days, then it was unavailable for a long time. Classic 70'action film...if you haven't seen it do yourself a favor and check it out

2) To Live and Die in LA - An 80's time capsule movie, but lots of good action and plot twists. I think it was more influential than people give it credit for. Early William Petersen, Willem Dafoe and John Turturro.

Name some movies that don't get talked about a lot but you like them a lot. Hidden gems basically.

In the Loop. The movie had absurdly high reviews so I watched it. It's probably my favorite comedy now. Armando Iannucci did it before Veep and The Death of Stalin. It's about British bureaucrats who are caught in the middle between the US and Britain over the latest war in Iraq. It could have been any topic, nobody in the movie cares about anything more than their career (maybe one or two excluded). Peter Capaldi as the insanely swearing Malcom Tucker is one of the greatest performances ever.
