Looking at getting an evaporative cooler to enjoy sitting outside more often.

Anyone have experiences with these? Any recommendations for brands/models they like? Options?

How well do they work in Louisiana heat/humidity?
Is it worth the cost?

Looking at this one currently LINK

Pretty sure they don’t work in Louisiana.

Yes, they work even in Louisiana -- just not as well as places with lower humidity. I have that exact model. Two neighbors and friends bought them after experiencing mine.

having used it and understanding its capabilities, would you purchase it again?

My neighbor bought the 600 dollar one and has used it for 2 weeks straight. Loves it.
It's not super cold but definitely feel cool air. If you're outside you can plug in the garden hose and it fills automatically.

Swamp coolers do not work very well in the swamp. You may get some cooling but it's minimal and not worth the amp draw IMO.

I bought 2 cajun cooling fans and they work pretty good. You can freeze plastic coke bottles and drop them in, the colder the water the cooler the air.

While LA Isn’t the ideal place for those…. They def do help on a hot patio. I bought that model last month and it makes the patio much more enjoyable. You do have to pretty much be in the path of the air though…. But when comparing the air flow from the hessaire vs my wall mounted fan, there’s a huge difference. It def Blows way cooler air.

They work just fine, it’s cold air blowing on you

I add ice to mine and it’s cold

Best way to tell if they work is looking at the LSU sidelines in Aug and seeing those big arse cooling fans.

Basically the same thing.

We purchased a 48” Port-A-Cool fan at work (industrial plant) and collected some data from it on multiple different days in south LA. On HIGH humid days, the fan was LESS effective in cooling, than days when the humidity was LOW. Biggest temp difference we saw was 12-14 degrees cooler than the ambient temperature in the area, of course that day has low humidity. They are effective to some point even on days with high humidity (3-4 degrees). We ended up purchasing 2 more 36” fans which are still running to this day. Would highly recommend Port-A-Cool.

Absolutely. Just know everything in the garage will get wet.

Yes, I would. The fan is great even without the 'swamp' part. My wife thinks I'm amazing for buying it because she didn't think it would be a good purchase.

Three fan speeds. I usually run it on medium speed and that's plenty of air for people just sitting in the vicinity. The high speed makes enough noise to make you raise your voice, but it's still not too bad. I could only see using that to direct it toward people who are sitting 20+ feet away and the sound is less of an issue then.

They work great in Utah, but I've never heard of their use in the south. Plus I'd guess that the pads would get moldy because the water in the pads never really evaporates. I can run mine in the summer in Utah without water for 10-15 minutes and the pads are bone dry.

I clean mine and dump all of the water in the Fall. That involves removing the fill, etc. which is easy to do. I also bought the cover for it so it sits, dry, and is covered until it's needed once again.

EDIT: I also use a bacteriostatic.
