Yeah, I probably had 2 1/2 hours total invested in a private sell. From taking pics, posting adds, returning a dozen or so text and meeting the buyer.
So, you really better value your time if an hour 45 is worth a couple of thousand. Close to $20 a minute. YMMV.

Your results are not guaranteed. You can sell it quickly or you may get a bunch or tire kickers. It depends on area and type of car selling.
In OP's rules, private sell would qualify as last resort. It would net most money though. If he qualified to get most money, then private sell would move to top.

Sold mine to CarMax for like $1,500 less than I could have on private market. Was quick and painless.

KBB Instant cash offer will send your specs to local dealerships and they’ll all call to set up an appraisal for the car. The first three are all over Internet/e-mail to get the value, but are subject to inspection/confirmation. Top 3 are non-negotiable, dealerships will usually meet/.beat the best offer. When I sold my truck, I got 3 offers from local dealerships- that was a year ago. The last appointment matched the highest offer, so I sold it to them. They washed/detailed it, marked it up $4k and sold it in 2 days

He can set up stop loss of say 4 hours of time. If the deal isn’t closed then sell to a business.
Or get a neighbor or someone to sell it for him. Figure out the minimum he’ll take for it. Tell the neighbor he’ll split anything paid over that amount.

Then advertise it that same day - no haggle - on Facebook or Craigslist with a plan to meet at the closest police station.
Price it at $2000 over the best offer and you will sell it in 72 hours. Put in the ad that they only have 6 days to close the deal and no holds. Must meet at their bank and watch them draw out the counter check personally and then have them the keys.
Day 7 no sale? Take it to Carmax or Carvana. And get your check.
PS - I have successfully done this 5 or 6 times.

I had an old Pathfinder I kept around for outdoor stuff and decided to get rid of it.

My wife had a 2015 Lexus GS350 with about 60,000 miles she wanted to sell. I went to KBB to check values, and apparently I inadvertently clicked on a link to prospective buyers. I got several emails, and she sold it to one of them for $26,000, which was a decent deal for a quick sale. A rep for the company flew out from Texas, met us at our bank, and after about 30 minutes waiting for approval from his company, he gave her a check and drove away.
eta that Atlanta area Lexus dealers were offering her about $22,000 for a trade in on a RX.

Besides my time, it is worth a certain amount of money to avoid dealing with strangers, and handling sizable amounts of money. Sellers have been burned with fake cashiers checks, had the vehicle stolen at gun point, and the most common, the buyer claims the vehicle has a issue and wants their money back even though it was in writing that it was sold as-is.

My barely above base package, 2011 RAM with right around 200k miles on it was worth $9500 when I totalled it 2 years ago. That's what the insurance company gave me, which was dead on for KBB.

KBB is $10k+. Sounds like a great reliable car for a teenager or anyone that needs a budget friendly sedan.

It's a great car, never had any issues, of course the normal wear and tear of some items. It's a pretty big car for a teen, it's more like a family car, it is not sporty in any way.
