I think your kids should be fine, absolutely evacuate, and try and be as north as possible for insurance rates. Please update later with your impressions after the visit.

I will. I am plotting our stops along the way. Dinner in Pass Christian as soon as we land. She has seen New Orleans I want her to see the water asap!

If anyone has suggestions for best restaurants, neighborhoods to see, or places to meet local people we would love to hear them.

I am going to try to hit a grocery store and walmart in each town just to see the cross sections of the community

If you’re landing in NO, take the MS Gulf Coast as the crow flies from Waveland to Pascagoula, it will save you a lot of time if you’re scouting out your new home and you can see the differences and amenities/negatives of each.

Gulfport is central and big, but not somewhere you want to live unless private schools (and area previously posted). As much as I love BSL & OS for everything they are great for, I wouldn’t live there. Set aside price, they’re too far away from center. None of the coast has pristine beaches, but there’s lots of stuff to do with your kids in the gulf: fishing, crabbing, floundering, boating, etc.

If it’s dinner in the Pass, you’ll enjoy Bacchus on the Beach. Sit outside, great place to meet friendly locals. Then take her to the Pass park, it’s a minute away.

Hope this helps.

Just come to the central coast, don’t even need to leave coastal CA to find good folks. We bought a home in Monterey this spring and it’s been absolutely fantastic. Conservative great folks, San Carlos Parish has been a great church community, walkability, no traffic ever, amazing schools, parks, perfect year round weather, non existent crime, outdoor recreation, hiking, surfing, fresh seafood, breweries, world class golf, 30 min to Big Sur, Bay Area Wages

Is Diamondhead still around? Just north of BSL, iirc. Multiple golf
Courses, short drive for easy gulf access. Or am I getting old and everyone there is 80 years old. Haven’t been by there in 20 years or so. It was nice back in the day.

Thanks SS. I love that area but we need family around or at least drivable. I am keeping my Bay Area job. I won’t make quite as much because I will only work 24 hours a week but I think the savings will off set. I don’t think I would practice where ever we go because no where else will pay this amount of money to answer the phone.

Family and I have lived here for the last 10 years. Our kids do go private school at St. Patrick, though…Public schools closest to here are D’Iberville and Harrison County. Like others have mentioned before, Ocean Springs and Pass Christian will be the best for public schools…As far as safety, this is a very tight knit community with a park/YMCA/walking trail/lake/etc…We give our girls walkie talkie’s and they go all over (they are 12 and 9). There is also William Carey College, MS Gulf Coast Community College, USM, and a Diabetes/Obesity research facility from the Cleveland Clinic. One of those campuses has a nursing school and one has a pharmacy school. It is north of I-10 and takes about 15 minutes to get to D’Iberville…Good luck in your search!

It's still around. Nice area and north of I-10, but you're really cutting yourself off that far west. Not much of anything around there. Too remote for my liking.

I lived in Ocean Springs for 35 years, went to OSHS, etc. What do you want to know?

OSHS is probably the best overall public high school in Mississippi. I was a school board attorney at one time.

The town is very nice and people are generally highly educated and you will gladly pay the highest taxes in Mississippi because if you kids are semi smart they will get a free ride to college. Also real estate is most expensive. But we are ducking OS!
(Which means we know we are better than everyone else) lol.

St Patrick’s is ok but not strong academically, (my brother and step sister, 100 friends gfs went to its predecessor’s) and I have lots of friends with kids there etc. Plus the damn thing is 30 minutes from everyone. St Johns and Mercy Cross merged and unfortunately MC won out on academics.

Biloxi is a no for you (Email me privately and fill you in) Gulfport is hell no, unless you are going to St Patrick’s

Your other real option is probably Bay St Louis, it is really like the Ocean Springs I grew up in. If you had boys I would set u with my friend at St. Stanilous. Unfortunately, it is apparently built on cursed Indian graveyard or something and every major hurricane in Northern Gulf at least aims at it for a while and it gets destroyed every 20-30 years.

How involved in community do you want to be? What sports etc do kids like? How smart are they? Do you want to be in the good Mardi Gras krewes, for your daughter’s to be possible debutantes or at least go to the parties, etc. How much do you want to spend on a house etc?

Wow. Thats a lot of good information. Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me in the arse or get me doxxed on the OT but here are more details...

My daughters are 7 and 9. They are exceptionally smart and in the top 3 of each of their respective grades at an affluent school in the East Bay (of SF). I find that impressive because they are caucasian and many at their school are asian or indian and as a family we dont push them. Public schools are the only option as my husband was an educator and feels strongly in this regard. My needs from the school in order or importancel: safety, sports, academics, other activities, facilities.

We are looking to spend no more than 400K and may rent initially to make sure we know the area well enough to make a good choice. However, we will need to rent in the school district we purchase in to cut down on instability for our girls. Things I would like from our community in order of importance: safety, kindness, sports, convenience.

For a neighborhood, we need a yard. Being in California for 13 years has made me miss grass. I would like at least a 1/3 acre lot and would like even larger. We also want to be no further north than Ocean Springs border. It would be ideal to avoid flood insurance but I know I am getting far too limiting so will have to compromise on one of those. We dont need a fancy house and likely would prefer it not be a McMansion. 1600 sqft is perfect for us but could live in as little as 1200 or as much as 2500. I just dont want to heat and cool 3200 sq ft and I dont want to have to scrub 4 toilets a week A neighborhood that has sidewalks would be cool but maybe not necessary there as I imagine the traffic is considerably less.

We are a married couple in our mid 40s. Obviously we are left leaning but I give no shits about politics. Kind people are cool by me no matter what they vote or believe. You change people by being a good person not by brow beating others. Trump voters would be welcome at my table anytime. I am fully sleeved and probably wont look like a lot of the moms but I like to volunteer at the school as much as they allow and I coach softball in the community and my husband coaches basketball and soccer. Our girls play them all and do swim team. Both are also in dance and the youngest is staring violin and my oldest plays upright bass. We dont party or go out much because our kids have never been with a sitter and we have had no family around. We would likely gamble on sports because we love it. Our favorite family activities are camping, hiking, library etc. We are super boring.

Any insight you have is appreciated. Even if it is brutal honesty. We would love to hear more about this free ride to college. We began investing in their college accounts the day they got the SS# but free would be amazing and Georgia calls to us for that reason. Are scholarships that easy to get or is there a public university program that allows for free attendance with great grades?

Edit: I would love to be in a krewe but never have been. That culture is a large part of the draw to the area. I doubt they would do the debutante thing. My family didn't have that money growing up so I didn't. They are pretty athletic and it's hard to get them to even do their hair. But I would support them if they wanted to explore it.

this is doable, particular for the square footage you are wanting.

maybe alittle tougher. I don't remember seeing much when we were house searching in the ocean springs area, obviously things can change though (we were looking March/April of this year)

if your below i10 you are going to have to pay for flood (at least that's what our real estate person said)

What is the industry/job market for these areas?

There's a lot of regional industry along the coast.

Biloxi/Gulfport - hospitality, shrimping/fishing, maritime commercial port, military

Coastal - Huntington Ingalls shipbuilding, Chevron oil refinery, Aerospace

You are going to end up in OS. 400k is doable, magnolia bayou, stark bayou, Bienville Place would all be good subdivisions for you. If you could find something downtown maybe even better as your swim team practices will be at the YMCA

Starting to get crowded/overbuilt.

Biggest downside is probably Hancock school district (which isn't bad but isn't as good as the others on the Coast).

Nothing downtown but a 1700 square foot cool house across the street by graveyard for 400k, (outrageous to me but whatever) also couple of houses in Bienville Place that will work for u
