As an old-timer, I would pick the new group. But it’s closer than those who never saw the first group play think it is. Especially if you’re talking college career as opposed to NFL career.

Eric Martin, a converted running back, broke the SEC career receiving yards record in the early eighties.

Wendell Davis broke Martin’s SEC career receiving yards record and was a two-time All American and the SEC player of the year in 1987.

Josh Reed, another converted running back, again broke the SEC career receiving yards record, was a consensus All American, and was awarded the Belitnikof award as the best receiver in the nation.

Michael Clayton was also a fine receiver and all around football player.

New

Chase and Jetts are both much better than Davis or Reed. Landry and Martin are a draw. Beckham is much better than Clayton. This is not a close call.

But if you have a running team, it's the old school.

Easy choice, but I wouldn't mind seeing Reed and Clayton in modern offenses.

The old school guys got a pretty big gap between the really old (Davis/ Martin) and kinda old (Reed/ MC).

I feel like we could split em and put Reed/ Clayton with guys like Kennison, Bowe, Devery, or Lafell.

PS I'm not old enough to remember Davis and Martin at LSU, barely in the NFL

I’m 54 - LSU FB consciousness dates to around 1979 for real memories. I take the noobs and it’s easy if you ask me. I appreciate the talent of the old group, but these recent guys are the pick.

That's based on career yardage, not a ranking.

Why belittle any of them?
First group college exploits off the charts good.

Also, Michael Clayton is not old school.

Kennison much better choice for first group.

Wendell Davis elite all American … quality NFL career until BOTH knees blown out on the same play on turf. Gruesome injury.

Josh reed … belitnikoff !?!? Hello.
Eric Martin beast all American 10+ year nfl career

New school = studs. But Jarvis doesn’t hold a candle to first group..

I don't know about that. I would struggle to take any one of those guys out of the room.

Clayton and Jefferson are 2 of the hardest working college WRs (a position group known for diva behavior more than hustle) I've ever seen.

Reed was seemingly able to get open on any play. Even if he was the only receiver in the pattern. Chase could score from any place on the field. Davis was as good all around receiver the game has seen. OBJ and Martin manufactured receptions out of bad passes (and, to be fair, Juice and Jetts did this at times as well).

If the “old school” guys got to play in the “new school” offenses…then it would be easier to decide.

Not sure if serious

* Not one person on the old list could carry the jock strap of the most recent group. Even Reed. That’s how good those guys are.

This is one of those threads when people who never saw the older group play uses the NFL to judge college performance. It’s like saying Danielle Hunter is LSUs alltime best pass rusher.
