How much longer can this go on?
What the hell happened?

There wasn’t even a bartender there at 5:00 on a Friday!
I’ll often pass by at peak hours and it’s reliably deserted.

Food seems decent enough
People like to complain about $5 tacos but they sure as hell eat $15 wraps at Beer Garden or $20 entrees at Elsie’s. Superior has always been really expensive but they’re packed every weekend.

I will say this. The booths had crumbs on the tables and seats. But why? It’s inexcusable.

What gives?

Barracuda down the street is excellent and fairly priced. Govt Taco isn't.

Surely at one point the food was great. It earned a reputation.

So again, what the hell happened?

last time I went, we went early and were the only ones there. Still took them 35 min to get out 4 tacos, one of which was a fish taco that was stone cold so I sent it back.

Ducote doesnt even own it anymore and its run by Guarantee media, so it doesnt surprise me they let it go to shite.

the only thing they really have going for them is the queso and one or two tacos.

I defended them when they were at white star market but they went cheap on the ingredients and raised prices

The Jay Ducote reputation is what gave it the reputation.

Jay is an awesome guy and works hard. But he was a blogger who suddenly became the authority of food in BR. His only chef and restaurant experience was Govt Taco. His name gave Govt Taco the reputation.

Close. A somewhat entertaining personality and backyard cook was suddenly dubbed a Chef and though he could take his home cooking ideas and home crafted BBQ sauce and turn it into a successful restaurant (not sure why he chose tacos over BBQ). Guaranty Broadcasting tried to capitalize upon his mediocre skills and bought his little budding empire out lock, stock, and barrel. Dismal ratings for his afternoon radio show lead to his departure from Guaranty who took total control of his BBQ sauce, rubs, and restaurant at the beginning of 2023. I guess they thought his reputation was enough to keep it going. Which they have done. To the same if not worse level of sales. I have no idea if the sauces and rubs are even on the market any longer.

Everyone must be going to barracuda only, every time I go it’s hard to find a table. Great food and drinks

Govt Taco was great when it was in White Star. When they got their own spot and Guaranty took over right after is when it took a down turn. Food quality went down hard after that I think. The restaurant worked better as a small food court type spot. There’s plenty of other Taco spots in town now though. When Govt started it was really the only thing like it in BR. Now you’ve got RPT, Barracuda, Torchys, Blue Corn and others in town. Guaranty thought they could maintain the rep without Jay at the helm. And they just can’t. Part of the reason people went there was for Jay. He’s a likable dude and great to interact with. They bought him out long before 2023. But they 100% severed ties earlier this year. The decline started when they took over around 2020 and dropped off a cliff once Jay was completely gone.

Baracuda is almost just as much in terms of pricing. These taco places are getting ridiculous with the pricing.

GOVT TACO
Pork taco $4.75
Chicken taco $4.00
Fish taco $5.50
Side chips and guacamole $3.00
3 salsas and chips $7.00
$24.25

BARACUDA
Pork taco $3.95
Chicken taco $3.95
Fish taco $5.00
Side guac $3.25 + chips $2.00
1 salsa and chips $6.00
$24.15

Nailed it.

His chef at the White Star location also left after White Star shut down and before the stand alone spot opened.
