The officiating was inexplicable.

So Floyd should have absolutely struck out batter 1. Then it went south on him in his head. But terrible officiating! Hard to argue that graphic

LINK

Here is a link to the first batter that walked. I’m not saying the umpire is good, but this clearly shows there are only two possibilities here:

This data is wrong or the small box in the center is the strike zone and everyone is reading the chart wrong.

Nobody can watch that sequence and say every pitch is a strike (which is what the data in the op shows)

He does not frame the best and it takes a catcher to see it but there were many pitches that were "there" called balls.

I think the middle square is supposed to be their “strike zone” in those graphics.

Regardless, the umpire’s 6th inning zone completely changed and it’s unarguable. He was bad the entire game, but the low strike completely went away in the 6th. I don’t think Tranvinski was helping him very much back there either — I don’t understand why he doesn’t try to frame up more. It’s like he’s playing hot potato back there with how quickly he pulls the glove and throws it back to the pitcher.

So I’m guessing the K Zone or whatever they call it either wasn’t available or wasn’t turned on?

It appears whatever ESPN was using was some sort of approximation

Absolutely atrocious inning by the umpire. How you go from having a fairly wide zone all night to suddenly squeezing in the middle of the game is absurd. The first batter in the inning watched 5 strikes. That cannot happen at this level of play.

Those graphics are BS. There weren't that many borderline pitches in that sequence. Several of those pitches were way out of the zone.

According to the graphic, there were zero actual balls thrown last night

We can stop using that graphic people

It is time to take umpires out of the equation of calling balls and strikes. The technology is available, it is time to put it in play.
