however Smoke and Turtle was able to leave Paul with Dean, Schimpf, Jared Mitchell, and Ochinko.

Blake Dean was recruited as a pitcher, and Jared Mitchell was recruited by Les Miles. Regardless, all the talent Mainieri was left with were freshman. The roster was a complete mess overall. Easily the least talented roster we've had since before Skip stepped on campus

He got to Omaha twice and that’s an accomplishment in itself. It’s so hard to even get there.

That obviously wasn't the issue, but what proceeded after that was him starting to run the program into the ditch. That was the fireable offense. 13-17 SEC record in his last season.

It took us 2 years to recover.

"Never follow a legend"

And some guys are meant to manage. Others are meant to be 3rd base coaches their careers. I suspect Smoke was more of the latter.

So you’re saying that a drunk got LSU to Omaha twice? Impressive!

I met Smoke out at private get togethers around BR a couple times back in the day. He was always a friendly guy, enjoyed chatting with people, and would definitely throw a beer back with you.

I know Skip had groomed him for the job, and surely he offered him guidance during his tenure as coach. It's too bad it didn't work and I kind of felt bad for old Smoke.

Smoke started strong but used the Bertman method of recruiting by reputation which didn’t last long. Had a solid staff early on I felt like and the wins came but the Omaha coaching wasn’t there. He knew baseball more than most but got lazy and didn’t exactly have the healthiest of lifestyles. Towards the end he was rarely seen in the dugout. Not to say he wasn’t there but he didn’t move enough to be seen which made people question his effort. He didn’t have the intangibles that a program needs to be successful. It’s not all baseball knowledge. His last few recruiting classes just weren’t great.
