Yep. I appreciate that many people won’t care, but it ruins the watch for me.

The Khaki King fixes that

But then you have cutoff numbers which some people hate.

Seiko and Hamilton are both solid brands in your price range. I have a bunch of much more expensive mechanical watches yet I wear my Hamilton quartz a LOT. And I have five Seikos that I rotate in and out. Was wearing one the other night at a white tablecloth dinner and got several compliments on it.

Point being. You don't have to drop $5k to have a nice watch. But it does help.

It's not my ideal, but I hate it less than the bumped in 15, which I hate tit for tat with diagonal 4:30 date windows

Oh no the full day of the week spelled out just looks strange.

This is another Hamilton but is quartz and a little smaller but I do like the style.

How many watch nerds on here thought he was asking for a strap that was under 500?

Just the strap and under 500 is indeed not casual.

Are Marathons under 500? Some styles I believe used to be.

I’ve been able to find treatment for watch addiction. It’s called guitar addiction and woodworking.

I did I was about to jump in and recommend some bespoke stingray leather until I realized what he meant

OP, I would stick with something from Tissot, Seiko, Hamilton in that price range. Try to get as few complications as possible so the dial isn't overly busy.

I think this watch from Baltic, a french microbrand, would be a good call:

Here is the silver dial:
